Haverfordwest County 1 – Caerau Ely 2

Rhys Dalling missed a sitterCaerau Ely came from behind and scored two late quick-fire goals to pinch the victory against Haverfordwest County at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

The homesters took the lead when Rhydian Davies converted a penalty shortly after the break, but the visitors collected the points when Ben Burns and super sub Sam Cawley bagged the goals for the club from Cardiff.

This was the visitors’ second win on the bounce while the Bluebirds have lost both their opening games.

There were no goals in the first period, with neither side carving out a scoring opportunity and both keepers James Gwilt and Scott James having a quiet opening 45 minutes.

Ashley Bevan looked strong and dangerous up front for the Bluebirds, in defence skipper Sean Pemberton and Nathan Banner were strong.

Nicky Palmer was industrious in the middle of the midfield with Steffan Williams, Rhydian Davies and Kristian Speake working tirelessly.

Bevan struck a shot from distance that flew over the crossbar as both teams went into half time with plenty to discuss and looking to improve in front of goal in the second period.

Shortly after the interval the Bluebirds took the lead when they were awarded a penalty. Speake made inroads in the Caerau Ely box and was brought down by centre back Ben Burns. Rhydian Davies confidently sent James the wrong way and that goal gave the Bluebirds a slender one goal cushion.

Late goals

The home outfit really should have grabbed a second goal minutes later, when good work down the left by Steffan Williams, and his inviting cross fell for Dalling to volley, but the striker skied it over the crossbar.

The visitors pressed hard for an equaliser, Gwilt pulled off two terrific saves to deny striker Andy Smith. But ten minutes from full time the visitors levelled matters when Burns struck from inside the box, then a couple of minutes later up popped substitute Sam Cawley to grab the winner.
