Kilgetty were deserved winners of the 2024 Alan Brown Cup Final as they overcame the strong challenge of a Hundleton side playing a section lower bur already looking certs to gain promotion – but on this occasion unable to contain the powerful Kilgetty batting line-up over two innings but pushing them all the way on a cracking track at Whitland Cricket Club, who were, as usual, fantastic hosts for this competition, organised by the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Officials.

Both teams came into this Sunday final with their confidence high after big wins the previous day and Kilgetty were quickly into their stride when they batted first, with skipper Ben Evans and talented teenager Jack Badham finding the boundary rope regularly as well as running well between the wickets – and they put on 52 before Evans was well caught by Elliott Midgley off Owen Hughes for 28 (five fours).

But Hundleton were unable to press home that advantage because Badham and new partner Richard Webb increased the tempo, with the latter soon on 39, including 4 boundaries and 2 maximums, before he fell to Kilgetty captain Ben Adams, who also removed Richard Cope for 17, including two more big sixes.

Andrew Evans added a speedy 11 not out in the final over (2 boundaries) and Badham was still there at the end of the 20 overs with a vital 59 not out (8 fours) in his role as anchorman.

Hundleton start well but unable to maintain their momentum throughout

Umpires: Huw Simpkins and Rob BellerbyHundleton knew they needed a solid start to their response but lost Paul Fox (10) to a Levi Hughes’ catch off Richard Webb before Iori Humphreys was joined by big hitter Craig Williams and a partnership flourished until Humphreys departed for 23 (4 fours), clean bowled by Richard Cope. Veteran run-getter Jonathan Williams (4) departed early to Kieran Sime but at 77 for 3 at the half way point of their 20 overs Hundleton were still in with a shout of matching the opposition.

But the loss of Williamson, when he had reached 42 (with 7 fours) was a body blow when he was well caught by Webb on the long-on boundary off 14 year old Ollie Badham, who returned fine figures of 2 for 9 as he later had Dylan Davies caught by Sime.

Skipper Adams scored 17 but was caught behind by Evans off Cope, who ended up with 3 for 21 as Steff Williams, B Matthews and Davies came and went before Owen Hughes (17) and Dave Lockyer (9) were unbeaten at the end of the innings and helped take the score to 129 for 8 and a deficit of 35 before a scrumptious team provided by Shan Richards and her daughter Hannah for all the players, officials and even some supporters from both clubs!

Scorers: Beckie Badham and Mike PriceKilgetty turn the screw as Badham leads Kilgetty to another decent score

With such a healthy first innings lead Kilgetty adopted the same batting policy again after tea as Evans and Badham got off to a decent start, despite the skipper sustaining a glancing blow to the head before bravely continuing to 15 (one four and one six) before he was bowled by Hughes – but they moved to 55 for 1 in ten overs as Richard Webb and Badham punished anything loose but gave nothing way.

They reached 87 for 2 after 15 overs as Badham was  bowled for 40 (six fours)  by Welsh Premier footballer Humphreys, who grabbed a second wicket when he had Webb caught by Adams for 30 (4 boundaries) – and it was left to Cope and Andrew Evans to pillage 14 runs off the last over that took Kilgetty to 132 for 3 and that big lead!

Hundleton chase hard but again lose wickets at key times

Chasing such a big total was always going to be a real challenge but Hundleton needed a Jack Badham-type opener to stay the course – and despite the efforts of Iori Humphreys and Paul Fox to give them a flier it was Fox who departed for 11 as he was removed by Richard Webb with the aide of an Ollie Tucker catch.

Then the innings followed a similar pattern to the first as Humphreys top-scored with 34 (5 fours) and there were again double figures for Williamson, Jonathan Williams, Adams and Hughes but Cope’s 4 for 18, supported by Webb (1 for 29), Ollie Badham (1 for 33) and Sime (1 for 18) kept the chance of defeat to a minimum, despite Hundleton’s efforts right to the final delivery.

The post-match presentations were made by PACO chairman Trefor Evans, who had come out of hospital just a day earlier but did his usual great job alongside Hon Secretary Arthur Brady in the organisation of the day. He congratulated both teams on their part in an excellent contest, the umpires, scorers and Whitland CC for such wonderful use of their facilities!

He presented to Alan Brown Trophy to Kilgetty captain Ben Evans – with talented teenager Jack Badham chosen by County Club hon secretary as man of the match for his scores of 59 not out and 40, which proved vital in the overall patterns of play.

It completed a memorable day for the Badham family because Jack’s younger brother Ollie (14) claimed three wickets, including Hundleton ‘Danger Man’ Craig Williamson in both innings. Then mum Beckie did an excellent job of scoring and dad Trevor was the Kilgetty team manger!
