Impressive league leaders Nomads beat Bluebirds to complete the double
JD Cymru Premier:
Connah’s Quay Nomads 2 – Haverfordwest County 0
League leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads deservedly took the honours against gritty Haverfordwest County at the Deeside Stadium.
Earlier in the season the professional outfit won 4-1 at the Bridge Meadow and then followed up with this 2-0 win to complete the double over the Bluebirds.
Goals either side of half time by George Horan and Mike Wilde, the latter striking an incredible milestone of his 200th league goal, which secured the Flintshire outfit the points.
Wayne Jones’ Bluebirds came into this clash in confident mood following last week’s excellent 2-1 win against TNS but found it difficult to create many decent chances against a well-drilled Nomads team which is a quality outfit.
Pemberton comes in for suspended Jones
Sean Pemberton was the only change from last week for the visitors’ starting line-up, the skipper replacing Alaric Jones in the heart of defence, who was suspended as he had picked up five yellow cards.
The Nomads put the visitors under early pressure as the dangerous Wilde put two headers wide, whilst Callum Morris struck a firm volley straight at keeper Matthew Turner.
Horan opens the scoring
Turner pulled off a few more decent saves before the keeper took a nasty blow to the face. On the stroke of half time The Nomads opened the scoring as Horan made no mistake from inside the box.
This was a bitter blow for the visitors who were determined to get to the break without conceding.
At the break Bluebirds' gaffer Jones made two changes as Wojciech Gajda replaced the injured Turner in goal plus Cameron Keetch came on for Dan Summerfield.
Horan went close as he headed over the crossbar, and , Corey Shepherd went close to levelling matters for the visitors with an audacious bicycle kick.
Wilde adds crucial second
In the 59
th minute the hosts gabbed a crucial second goal as striker Wilde had the simple task of a tap-in at the far post.
To the visitors credit they kept pressing forward and enjoyed a good spell when substitute Elliot Scotcher blazed a long-range effort over the crossbar.
Replacement goalkeeper Gajda quickly rushed off his line to smoother a great chance for Morris to add a third and The Bluebirds made the long journey home with the disappointment of defeat.
Next Saturday, 27
th March, Haverfordwest County travel to Newtown in another tricky away game.
