Harries hat-trick sets up big Borderettes win

Welsh Premiership League:

Llandaff North 19 - Whitland 20

The Borderettes completed the double over Llandaff with an unexpected bonus point win in Cardiff, playing really well as a team despite missing several key players.

Whitland had to re shuffle their side, with hooker Delyth Davies filling in on the wing and the late arrival of Welsh international Sioned Harries meant she had to slot in on the bench.

The Borderettes started with a bang from the first ruck as outside half Alice James sliced through from her own 22 and sprinted to the opposition 22 but the Whitland support was slow in arriving and the chance went a begging.

Llandaff take control

Llandaff slowly started to take control and with the outstanding half back pairing of Becky Newton and Mared Evans calling the shots they scored two tries in a ten minute spell, both were well taken by Sarah Barret out wide one of which was converted by Evans.

Towards the end of the half the Whitland pack started to get the upper hand in the loose and from good possession on the half way James put in a sublime cross field kick which was well taken by Heather Rees on the left wing, who out-sprinted the cover defence, side stepped the full back and scored out wide.

Borderettes bounce back well

The third quarter was controlled totally by the Borderettes and Harries, who was brought on at half time, was the first to score. A good burst by Davies down the right was halted on the try line and from the ruck Harries picked up and powered over.

Shortly afterwards she crossed the whitewash again after a sweeping backs move put her into space and her speed did the rest.

Harries exerts her influence

With Whitland dominating and holding a three-point lead the game looked safe , but with ten minutes to go up popped Mared Evans on the blind side and a super break by the Llandaff outside half resulted in a try under the posts and she also added the extras to give the home side a four point lead.

The Borderettes weren’t quite finished, however,  and with the final play of the game the ball was worked wide to player of the match Elin Hywel, who broke through the midfield, off-loaded to Harries, who stepped the full back and touched down under the posts for the winning try.
