Pennar Robins 1 – Goodwick United 2

Reigning cup holders Goodwick United came from behind to gain a hard fought victory against gritty Pennar Robins at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium under lights in front of a decent crowd on Friday evening.

Chris O’Sullivan’s Phoenix Lads had to dig deep for this victory, which has kept them on track for retaining the double.

The Phoenix Lads had previously gained convincing wins over the Robins in the league, however, the Robins put in a decent showing in this hard fought semi-final tie which the club, players and fans can rightly be proud of.

Any ideas that the reigning Division One champions and Senior Cup holders had of having an easy passage against the Robins were quickly dispelled as the outfit from Pembroke Dock took a surprise lead, but Goodwick dug deep, as like all quality teams they have  a canny way of getting that elusive win when things aren’t going all their own way.

The Robins stunned Goodwick as they took an early lead through Sean Edmundson who finished low in the far corner from the edge of the 18-yard box, following a neat Ceri Griffiths assist.

The cup holders squared matters thirteen minutes later as returning from injury midfielder Rhys Jones struck from inside the box.

Hot cup favourites took the lead  before the break as Rhys Dalling scored, the striker took a touch before he slotted underneath advancing goalkeeper Rory Williams, to give Goodwick a slender 2-1 half time lead.

Territorially The Phoenix Lads had the majority of possession but incredibly there were no further goals in the second half, but the Robins can take full credit for taking the reigning champions all the way in a tense finish.

Shortly after the final whistle Goodwick United manager Chris O’Sullivan sportingly said: “I have to give Pennar Robins full credit for their dogged performance tonight, they worked their socks off making it difficult for us to break them down. We have to play much better if we’re going to win the final next week.”
