Georgia's a great Young People's Officer

Georgia Osborne-DaviesSomersaulting, bouncing and dancing her way into the Sports Pembrokeshire spotlight this month is former cheerleader Georgia Osborne-Davies.

Georgia has always been heavily involved in dance and gymnastics and this love led directly to her role with the team as an Active Young People Officer at Ysgol Harri Tudur.

Georgia studied dance at university and picked up cheerleading as a hobby and became a ‘flyer’ – the cheerleader who is thrown in the air during routines.

Georgia’s time at university with the Kingston Cougars Cheerleading Squad provided the platform to teach dance at Greenhill School in Tenby before her current role came up.

Lots of extra-curricular work

That role involves a mixture of organising extra-curricular activities and working with different groups of pupils to develop confidence through sports.

Georgia says she is particularly proud of the disability boxing club that has been set up in the school, adding: “It has taught me a lot about inclusion for all.”

Asked why involvement in sports is so important for young people, Georgia responded: “Providing people with a positive sporting experience from a young age, whether it is in a school or community setting, can encourage you to be active, leading to improved health and wellbeing throughout life.

“Learning through sport can aid in the development of teamwork, physical, personal & social skills as well as learning the importance and of physical activity and nutrition.”

Challenges are faced to the full

Maintaining involvement in sport during the pandemic has been one of the major challenges faced by the Sport Pembrokeshire team.

Georgia and colleagues rose to the challenge by making more resources available online, through the Sport Pembrokeshire learning zone and this platform provides sources for all ages to be active at home, with PE lessons and challenging activities for all the family.

And now that schools are once again functioning as closely to normal as possible, Georgia hopes that more and more young people will get to enjoy the benefits of sport.

She added: “The hope is that clubs will flourish once again inside and outside of school and people feel safe taking part in the community and supporting each other.”
