Disappointing defeat for Haverfordwest County against The Nomads

JD Cymru Premier – Phase 1

Haverfordwest County 1 – Connah’s Quay Nomads 3

Ben Ahmun - scored from the spot but picked up a second yellow card offence and was sent offHaverfordwest County disappointingly slipped to their third league defeat in a row as Connah’s Quay Nomads claimed three points on a very wet afternoon at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium.

County’s Ricky Watts was replaced by Tony Shepherd early in the game after the veteran collided with an advertising board and could not continue.

The Nomads took the lead in the 13th minute when good play down the left saw Harry Franklin’s far post header crash against the crossbar and Callum West found the back of the net with the rebound.

The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute as Corey Shephard was fouled inside the box, and up stepped Ben Ahmun, who confidently buried from the spot to level matters at 1-1.

Minutes later, Dan Hawkins drilled a low cross from the left which Ahmun slid in on but just missed contact, whilst at the other end Bluebirds' goalkeeper Ifan Knottr pulled off two fine saves to deny a goal-bound Declan Poole’s header and also forced Jack Kenny wide as it remained 1-1 at half time.

The Nomads regained the lead in the 68th minute as the hosts failed to clear the danger which allowed Rhys Hughes to strike from the edge of the 18 yard area.

Haverfordwest County were reduced to ten men as Ahmun picked up a second yellow for a sliding tackle on Dan Cowan, with manager Tony Pennock also seeing red late on as he picked up a second yellow as tensions were running high.

Hughes added a third on 90 minutes,  his second goal of the game, which he scored with a far post tap-in from a neat Harry Franklin low cross from the right.
