Crymych win annual Newport Barbarian Sevens

Sevens winners CrymychThe 33rd annual Newport Barbarian Sevens competition went the way of Crymych as they overcame Whitland to claim the Glyn and Penny Rees Memorial Cup.

The Preseli Men overcame the Cardigan Exiles by six tries to three (6-3) to reach the final, while their second team (Tarwod) were beaten 3-1 by the Borderers in the other final four match.

And in a close final played in bright sunshine, it was Crymych who prevailed 4-2 with Dean James impressing on route to claiming the Player of the Tournament award. The champions also received a £600 cash prize for their troubles, with £300 going to the runners up.

In the Plate final, the Exiles beat Tarwod 6-2 to claim the £175 prize.

Unfortunately four sides withdrew in the week building up to the event but there were still eight teams that took part, with hosts Newport entering two of them while St Davids and Hirwaun RFC also took part.

"A big thank you to all that organised and helped before, after, and on the day," said Gary Davies, who was insturmental in putting the tournament together.

"There's too many to name and also my thanks to everyone that supported the day and night. We had a supportive and well behaved crowd."

Referees were John Griffiths, Andrew Davies, Colin Phillips and Dave Byrne.
