County schoolboys win tournament at Portman Road
Pembrokeshire Schools Under 13s Squad recently entered two teams into the Ipswich Town F.C. ‘Play on the Pitch’ Tournament at Portman Road Stadium.
Every game was played on the actual pitch at the near 30,000 capacity all-seater stadium.
The stadium had graced Premier League football only last season and the talented group of youngsters, many of whom have been playing in the team together since the age of seven, finished the tournament as both winners and runners up.
Both teams won their respective groups and semi-final matches, playing against teams from Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex to name just a few.
This resulted in an all-Pembrokeshire Final with the game being played in good spirits and captains Owain Banner and Toby Jones (Both from Ysgol Bro Gwaun) lifted the trophies together.
Leading the way with the goals for Pembrokeshire on the day were Logan Lewis (Ysgol Harri Tudur) and Brayden Bent (Ysgol Bro Gwaun). Pembrokeshire Schools’ Coaches Matthew Price, Ben Field-Thomas and Rhys Holmes were obviously delighted with the team’s success.
Matthew Price told Pembrokeshire Sport: “We are well chuffed for the boys. I felt they grew into the tournament and got better as the day went on.
“We were runners up last year at Stamford Bridge in Chelsea, so to go one better and win it this year is fantastic and the boys deserve it.
“Thanks to the boys, their mums and dads, the coaches Ben and Rhys, Angie Nicholls and Mark Hicks along with our main sponsors Minster Diesel Services and RWE. Without all of you, this would not be possible.”
