Borderettes bag another big win

Gwernyfed 10 - Whitland 22

The Borderettes got back to winning ways in what is always a tricky game, playing in their second strip of purple and whites their pack took control in the first half and supplied some quality ball for their backs to use.

The first score came after some good drives by Beca Norris and Jenny Collins which resulted in quick ball from which Alice James released her outside backs, Mari Griffiths making her first start of the season after returning from playing in America picked the ball up off her bootlaces and fed on to Natasha Roberts on the wing who sprinted away to touch down out wide.

Double triumph for Griffiths twins

Caryl Griffiths, on the other wing, was not to be out done and after some slick handling from Nat Walsh and Emma Summons and Griffiths, who was again the supplier of the final pass to her twin sister who powered through her opposite number to touch down.

Centre Lucy Demaine was up next as she picked up a loose ball in her own half, powered through the first line of defence and used her pace to outstrip the cover defence to score near the sticks and to round things off she kicked the conversion as well.

The last score of the half came from a scrum in the Gwernyfed 22, where Walsh at No8 controlled well at the base of the scrum, fed Summons on the blindside and she sneaked over for a well-crafted score.

Tougher second half

Things were always going to be tough in the second half, playing against a strong wind but the Borderettes’ defence held strong and in fact they should have extended their lead but some decisions now seemed to be going against them and with ten minutes to go the referee marched Whitland up the field with a series of penalties and a yellow card which resulted in Gwernyfed crossing for their first score, which went unconverted.

Shortly after the kick off the Borderettes looked certain to score their fifth try of the afternoon but the ref blew up as there was a fracas on the opposite side of the pitch. Gwernyfed scored their second try shortly afterwards and this was a mirror image of the first with a series of penalties and another yellow card resulting in another unconverted score from the Gwernyfed forwards.

Super defence in closing stages

The final five minutes was all-out attack from the home team but some superb tackling from Jenny Collins and Nat Walsh dropped their big forwards behind the gain, line time and time again holding out for a good morale-boosting win.

Whitland’s back of the match was Alice James and forward of the match was Jenny Collins.
Next game is home against Barry on the 29th November, KO 14:30 followed by the big local derby in the cup away to Haverfordwest on Friday 4th Dec (Much Support Needed!)
