Haverfordwest County 2 – Llanelli 1

Haverfordwest County got their opening pre-season friendly off to a winning start against Llanelli at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

A goal in each half by Jordan Followes and Declan Carroll gave the homesters a two-goal cushion before former Bluebird Declan John scored a late consolation penalty for the Reds.

The Welsh League Division One outfit took the lead in the eighth minute; Ricky Watts played a neat ball from right back to centre midfielder Carroll who cleverly released striker Fellowes, who duly placed a low shot past Reds’ keeper Peter Scammell.

Midway through the first period and the Reds were unlucky not level matters when a the dangerous Bruno Facuo whipped in a cross from the right, it caused confusion in the Bluebirds’ box and fell for Luke Jones, the striker struck a fierce right footed shot that skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Terrific stop

Scammell pulled off a terrific stop to deny Sean Pemberton from close range, the midfielder will be disappointed that he didn’t find the target.

The Bluebirds back four consisting of Watts, Sam Rodon, Dale Griffiths and Antonio Faccuito looked comfortable and keeper Craig Morris had a quiet afternoon.

Sam Wilson was lively on the left side for the home outfit, and Followes kept the Reds’ defence on their toes, making intelligent runs down the channels. Nicky Palmer returned to Bluebirds’ colours with an industrious performance in centre midfield alongside teenager Jack Britton.

In the second period, Bluebirds manager Wayne Jones introduced last season’s youth stars Gregg Walters, Laurie Haworth and Liam Fawcett, the trio acquitted themselves well playing at senior level, also Gethin Roberts came on and played a cameo role in the heart of midfield.

Composed finish

Five minutes after the break and Carroll added a well-taken second goal. The midfielder twisted in the box and was strong in the tackle before showing excellent composure by tucking the ball in the far corner.
