Haverfordwest County 3 – Cwmbran Celtic 0

An excellent second half saw the Bluebirds bang in three goals without reply to comfortably despatch of Cwmbran Celtic at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.

Leon Luby, Ricky Watts and Jack Wilson bagged the goals to secure the Bluebirds’ thirteenth victory of the season, which sees them move up to second spot on goal difference from third placed Cambrian and Clydach, and ten points behind runaway leaders Penybont.

Back in November the Bluebirds lost 3-1 at Cwmbran Celtic, but at home Wayne Jones’ impressive team gained sweet revenge with a comfortable three-goal victory.

“I’m really pleased with the boys today, we played with a diamond formation in midfield and it worked, plus we kept another clean sheet,” said Haverfordwest County manager Wayne Jones.

“We’ve got a good few youngsters in the side and I’m really pleased with the way they have all acquitted themselves at this level.”

Heavy rain and strong winds made life difficult, Fawcett should have opened the scoring early on, when the striker incredibly hit both posts when he should have scored.

Strike partner Wilson flashed a shot narrowly wide as the score was 0-0 at half time.

Shortly after the break a neat chest on the edge of the box by Wilson fell to Fawcett, who hurried his shot which went high and wide, but terrific understanding from the pair.

Luby's long range effort sails into net

Shortly after the break and hosts finally took the lead when right back Leon Luby’s shot-cum-cross from at least 30 yards sailed into the top corner of Lewis Watkins’s net.
 

Wilson’s cracker

The homesters added a second soon after, as Wilson bagged the goal of the game, an excellent ball over the top from Elliot Thomas saw Wilson run clear and showed great composure to lob the advancing Watkins for a classy finish.

The visitors nearly pulled one back when last season’s Welsh League player of the season Chris Ham turned quickly in the box, but his low shot was brilliantly stopped by young Bluebirds ever improving goalkeeper Kyle Stuart at full stretch.
 

Solid at the back

Sean Pemberton had a solid game in the heart of defence, and there was an impressive display by new signing Harri Rowe and there was a welcome return from injury for defender Alaric Jones.

Tom Dyson was busy in midfield for Wayne Jones’ men, plus Elliot Scotcher and Elliot Thomas controlled matters. Youngsters Fawcett and Wilson gelled up front - and given more games they will surely produce more goals as the pair grow in confidence.

Fawcett’s intelligent through ball saw Wilson block keeper Watkin’s attempted clearance, and the ball fell kindly for Watts to tuck the ball into the empty net from 18 yards. and secure the points for the Bluebirds.


Next Saturday, 9^th March Haverfordwest County have an away trip to Cwmamman United.
