A superb 98 from Haydn Shapcott ensured that Carew Seconds reached the last four of this year’s Alec Colley Cup at the expense of their counterparts from Neyland.

Shapcott was finally dismissed when he edged a catch behind from the last ball of the Carew innings seeking the two runs that would have given him a deserved century – but with support from Daf Bevan (33) at least ensured that his team had set a challenging total for Neyland to try and chase.

Scott Murray (26) batted well for Neyland and George Evans showed his batting skills with 33 not out but talented young Carew bowlers Max Brindley (2 for 38) and Iori Hicks (2 for 24) helped keep the lid on Neyland’s run chase and the home side were deserved victors by 49 runs.

Steve steers Lawrenny home

Lawrenny (135 for 3) beat Haverfordwest 2nds (134 for 7)

Umpires: Richard Merriman & Dai Morris
Scorers: Malcolm Thomas & Kelly Williams

Steve LewisA typically boundary-laden innings by experienced campaigner Steve Lewis helped take Lawrenny Seconds into the semi-finals at the expense of Haverfordwest Seconds, who probably started the match as favourites after appearing in the last three finals and winning two of them.

Put in to bat, Haverfordwest’s final tally of 134 for 7 owed much to Dan Cole (26), Gareth Davies (23), Sean Williams (26), Archie Thomas (14) and Adam Raymond (16). But Lawrenny bowlers Alistair Edwards (2 for 33), Simon Cole (1 for 35), Phil Cole (2 for 37) and Lewis (2 for 27) made sure that no-one stayed long enough to significantly raise The Town’s tempo at key times.

Lewis made Haverfordwest pay for an early dropped catch as he plundered runs so that although Simon Williams (1 for 17), Tom Pearse (1 for 20) and Sean Williams (1 for 21) bowled tight spells he took a huge toll on the others and scored 62 before he finally departed with the game all but won as he received support from Phil Cole (24) before Edwards (11 not out) and Joe Kidney (12 not out) saw Lawrenny into the last four.

Dewstowe brothers shine for Johnston

Johnston (137 for 8) beat St Ishmaels (134 for 6) by 2 wickets

Umpires: Rob Bellerby & Paul Webb
Scorers: Steve Mills (Snr) & Wendy Bradshaw

Ross DewstoweJohnston Seconds battled hard to nudge St Ishmaels Seconds out of the Alec Colley Cup as the Dewstowe brothers played major roles.

Ross topped the batting as he smashed 64 not out in typically aggressive manner and completed a match-winning performance with 2-35 as brother Danny also made his presence felt with an excellent 3 for 25 spell in tandem with Mark Hicks (1 for 26).

Mark Matthias (53) was the backbone of the Tish innings as they batted first and reached 136 for 6 thanks to his innings of 53 alongside Ieuan Hawkins (17) – but no-one else was able to launch late runs.

Dewstowe inevitably gave a chance which Tish failed to take and he hit the winning runs with three balls left of an entertaining tussle as Chris Goodridge (24) and Mark Hicks supplied the support at the other end despite the yeoman work of Jordan Milich (2 for 28), Kevin L Bowen (1 for 21), Lenny Rees (2 for 35) and Archie Smithies (1 for 45).

After successive withdrawals from Pembroke Dock and Pembroke, Alec Colley Cup holders Whitland 2nds were due to play their first match in this season’s competition against Burton at Oatfield Park on Monday evening (weather permitting).
