Alec Colley Cup Final Pen Pictures of Whitland 2nds and Lawrenny 2nds

Alec Colley Cup Final, Sunday, 13th August 2017

The Alec Colley CupThis season’s Alec Colley Cup Final, for second teams across the county, sees Whitland, holders for the past two seasons, take on a Lawrenny side which previously appeared in 1995 and 2005 but hasn’t got its name on the silverware yet.

The final is traditionally played at the Treleet Ground in Pembroke, where the ground staff ensure a pitch in tip-top condition: both teams look strong, with plenty of previous experience in first division cricket, alongside eager players who regularly ply their sporting trade in second team cricket.

It should be a fascinating clash between two clubs well known for their competitive, yet sportsmanlike, edge, and will be umpired by two experienced and knowledgeable umpires in Allan Hansen and Robert Ridge.

Whitland Seconds

Mark Lee (Captain)
Plays in the final as both chairman and captain - Mark brings a wealth of experience to the team with his knowledge of the game gained over many years of taking wickets at the top level – and scoring a few runs too!.

Gregg SleepGregg Sleep
Gregg joined Whitland CC having previously plied his trade with Luckett CC in South East Cornwall. Gregg has made a significant contribution to Whitland reaching the final as both a key slow bowler (hauls of 3 for 13, 2 for 32 and 4 for 26) and attacking batsman, (with innings of 17, 24 and 19).

Edward John
Ed is an attacking batsman who contributed a match winning 80 not out in the 2nd innings of the 2015 Alec Colley final. Work commitments have kept this talented player out of action but he has already completed a treble of winning the Ormond Youth, the Alec Colley and Harrison Allen finals.

Adam Davies
An accumulative batsman who will quietly keep the score ticking over while also happy to offer opposing batsmen his opinion from behind the stumps. Adam is also a very useful rugby player!

Gethin Benjamin
'Benji' plays in his third consecutive Alec Colley final and will be a vociferous presence in the field; a keen competitor who will give his all in every aspect of the game, with 1 for 23 in a previous round.

Jack BowenJack Bowen
Plays in his first Alec Colley final having been cup-tied for previous year’s finals. An explosive all rounder who can clear the boundary with ease (hit 33 in the semi-final)  as being able to alternate between leg spin and medium/quick bowling (previous round hauls of 2 for 62 and 3 for 26).

Gethin Scourfield
Gethin plays in his first Alec Colley final having been 12th man in last year’s final. A classy, all- round cricketer who will contribute with both bat and ball and will have a big say in determining the outcome of the final (with 2 for 23 in an earlier round)

Jamie Thomas
Jamie has played regularly for the 2nd team this year and like his good friend Gethin is a classy all- rounder who plays in his first Alec Colley final. Another that has come through the Whitland Juniors production line.

James Thomas
James plays in his 2nd consecutive Alec Colley final and is another who has come through the Whitland Junior production line. James is a capable batsman who has made a number of telling contributions with the bat this year.

Geraint Phillips
Playing in his third consecutive final and is another who will have a say in the outcome of the final. He has delivered with wickets in previous finals, notably in the final over win against Haverfordwest in 2015 (and 2 for 20 and 2 for 29 this season). Has also contributed runs regularly throughout this year’s cup campaign (19 and 37).

Paul Oeppen
Paul plays in his first Alec Colley final having been very unfortunate to miss out on previous finals. He has made significant contributions with the bat in this year’s campaign, scoring quick runs at the top of the order with scores of 20 and 32.

Steff Lee
Steff is another from the Whitland Junior system and will undertake the 12th man’s duties on the day.

Scorer:
Jenny Davies-Scourfield – has stepped into the role of scorer with ease and does a great job, not only of keeping a terrific score-book but up-dating the local press on match days.

A life-long player and key all-rounder, known for taking wickets and scoring runs quickly throughout his time with the club.  An immensely loyal player and sure to play a major part in events.

A very hard-hitting batsman who also joined Lawrenny from Cresselly.  A very experienced batsman who has played in several Bowl finals ‘up the road and likely to put that experience to good effect here.

James Phillips
Another all-rounder, who can score runs very quickly as he proved with 20 in the semi-final, as well as a useful 1 for 22 spell.

Another long-serving player and a batsman who has had a few 50s for the club – and is a good fielder as something of a bonus.

Ceri Jones
A very good all-round sportsman and a useful all round cricketer as a fast bowler who can score also score quick runs in the lower middle order.

Harry ThomasHarry Thomas

Tom Cole
A 16 year old who has quickly settled in as a useful batsman, as well as already being an excellent fielder.

Steve Cole
Known to all as ‘Spanner’ and a consistent bowler and keen-wicket taker this season.  Loves playing cricket and a joker who has played for over two decades – and a big leg-side hitter when he gets going.

Another long-serving player for whom loyalty is a watchword. Can build an innings with assurance when he’s on form, especially in difficult conditions.

Simon Jones
A steady bowler who has recently joined the club following his appointment as huntsman at the local hunt – previously played for Talgarth and Brecon.

Alistair Edwards
Does a good job for the club as a bowler, as he did with a 2 for 19 spell in the semi-final, and a great club man as an added bonus.

Adrian Harries
A very dependable batsman and occasionally called upon for bowling his canny slow stuff. Very popular around the boundaries and now taking an interest in rugby at Cardigan.

Stuart Prosser
Another who has served the club for a number of seasons and if called upon as a bowler certainly won’t let Lawrenny down.

Scorer:
Phil Williams
Known to all as ‘Goochie’ because of his uncanny resemblance to the former England opener, a very dependable batsman in his heyday and one of the former players who still serves the club so well.
