PembrokeshireSport.co.uk is delighted to be able to continue to highlight the magnificent achievements of our talented sporting people who were honoured at the 2021 Sport Pembrokeshire Awards evening at Folly Farm Theatre.
 
Today we continue with the ‘Club of the Year’ and ‘Disability Sport Achievement’ awards, both of which had wonderful nominations.
 
The descriptions have been edited from the ones seen by the voting panel – but still reflect what commitment and effort is shown by those mentioned below!
 
CLUB OF THE YEAR:




 
WINNERS – FISHGUARD & GOODWICK JEMIMA ROWING CLUB:
 
Fishguard & Goodwick Jemima Rowing Club has had a busy year and has grown and developed the sport.
In November 2020 club members competed in The Welsh & Scottish Combined Virtual Indoor Rowing Championships achieving 9 individual gold medals including 2 PR3PD Paralympic medals in the Men and Women Welsh team championships.
 
The club had 10 athletes competing in the British Championships and again took 5 gold medals and set new GB records in PR3PD and 90+.
 
The World Championships in January was another success with 2 World Records for Gaynor Martin & Val Coleman. The club have also established a working relationship with Ysgol Bro Gwaun and their success on the water this year has included Beach Sprints Gold and Bronze medal for Wales.

 


 

FINALIST – HAVERFORDWEST TENNIS CLUB:
 
Haverfordwest Tennis Club is one that certainly punches above its weight in competitions. In the recent Welsh Open in Cardiff, representatives brought home four national titles and two runners up medals.
 
It also boasts a men’s and women’s team competing in the national premier league, plus internationals in Jane Allen, Val Alder and Jeremy Cross. The club hosted its annual Pembrokeshire Open, veterans and junior tournaments this summer and also a very successful open day for people wanting to have a go at tennis.
 
There is a fully professional coach at the club who presides over a thriving junior section, and weekly social tennis catering for players of all standards. It has a welcoming atmosphere run by a dedicated committee.
 



FINALIST – PEMBROKE DOCK CRICKET CLUB:
 
Pembroke Dock Cricket Club has this year reached Division One through promotion after an approximate 60 year absence and the club also runs a second team and this year entered its first Ladies’ team into the Pembrokeshire Ladies League.
 
The club has worked tirelessly recently for the local homeless charity, as well as raising £7,000 for local mental health charities through cricket, and also to help fund the rehabilitation of Callum Jones, a club member who suffered a severe neck injury at the start of the season.
 
The club also hosted a number of county matches - highlighting the excellent voluntary work carried out by the club’s groundsmen as well as running both All Stars and Dynamo junior groups this year.
 
 


DISABILITY SPORT – ACHIEVEMENT OF THE YEAR:
 
WINNER – MICHAEL JENKINS:
 
Michael Jenkins is currently ranked no1 in UK for u17 in the F38 discus and shot-putt category.
 
Michael has had a phenomenal year in athletics because he is not only ranked number one for F38 classification for discus and shot putt he is also number 1 for all u17 discus competitions.
 
Michael has represented both the club and Wales in competitions this year and he has won gold medals at National and International competitions.
 
Most recently Michael won the Gold medal at the Schools international Athletics Board meeting and to round things off in fantastic fashion he was also named Welsh male athlete of the games.
 
FINALIST – LIBI PHILLIPS:
 
Libi has always been a great ambassador for disability sport in our county and had been very frustrated that she was not able to train on a basketball court locally or at her club in Swansea.
 
So she showed great tenacity as she had to adapt her training at home, which was not easy. Thankfully the return to play came just prior to the Wales under 15s wheelchair trials.
 
Libi was successful and became part of the u15s Wales girls’ 3x3 team who played in Loughborough at the UK School Games in September, the team did remarkably well winning the Bronze medal. All matches were on live stream and Libi showed her high skill levels and determination to the full.
 
 
FINALIST – LEON DAVIES
Leon has taken part in weekly online training sessions with his gym club and was so happy to have an email from Jenny (Wales disability cricket secretary) to say that the cricket was back on!
 
Leon has travelled back and fore to Swansea training and travelled down to Somerset for the first away game, where Leon played well!
 
He has since received his Wales disability cricket number as reward. We are so proud of what Leon has achieved over the last year and he is hoping to represent Wales again in Gymnastics at the Special Olympics summer event in 2022.
 
Over the past year Leon’s shooting club, swimming club, gymnasts club and cricket clubs all closed due to restrictions but he has overcome all hurdles so well.
