Haverfordwest County’s academy players found it hard going against their counterparts from Pontardawe as they did well to keep the scoresheet blank until the half-way stage but then conceded three goals in the second period and had relatively few chances at the other end.

But the Young Bluebirds deserve credit for the way that they battled away and were still looking for that elusive score until the final whistle, urged on by coach Dan Evans, despite the fact that Pontardawe clearly had the edge in experience and playing together over a longer period.

In that goal-less first half Josh Le Grice controlled his box well and central defenders Archie Hillier-Wood and skipper Iori Humphreys were joined by Nathan English and Jack Nicholas in keeping opposing front men Rio Booth and Teddy Weller shackled.

In contrast, Young Bluebirds’ Jack Jones and Dan James had relatively few chances and there were warning signs as wide men Sam Demery and Andzejs Dubjaga began to exert a real influence for the visitors as the game wore on.

Goals come as Pontardawe take charge

Lucas Davies, Noah Davison and Daniel Le Grice tried hard to stem the tide in midfield but the opening goal was a bit of a gift from a corner on the left by Artiom Legavec  gave Dubjaga a simple header which he planted into the net.

Teddy Weller fired a 20-yard drive over Le Grice’s bar before Pontardawe doubled their lead when after the same player headed against the bar and Demery netted the rebound.  Roman Legavec joined his brother as he replaced Demery and soon afterwards The Young Bluebirds’ best chance came from a Leon Barrett corner which Jones headed over the bar.

The final word went to the visitors with an own goal as Lucas Davies deflected a ball past Le Grice and although the teenager was clearly disappointed he could take consolation from the fact that he was one of the better home players on the day.
