Monkton Swifts 1 – Goodwick United 3

Goodwick captain Scott Delaney receives the Senior Cup from Mackie HartsSuper sub Jonny Horgan scored a dramatic late  third goal for Goodwick United to ensure Senior Cup glory  against a battling Monkton Swifts outfit on a glorious hot afternoon in front of a good crowd at the Ogi Bridge Meadow, writes Gordon Thomas.

Nigel Delaney’s Goodwick outfit picked up their ninth victory in the final as Stuart James’ Swifts very much played their part in a close encounter. Horgan struck late from near halfway really flattered the final score line.

Midway through the first half Ben Adams reacted quickest to head home the rebound which gave Goodwick the lead, but shortly before the break Jimmy Wilkes equalised with a composed finish. After the break Rhys Dalling edged his side ahead with an exquisite right footed strike before Horgan struck a 40 yard effort to seal victory for the Phoenix Boys.

It was Goodwick who started the better with some early pressing. Right sided midfielder Will Haworth curled a left footed effort high and wide.

The first Monkton chance saw Dylan Davies and Gareth Finnegan combine to set up Jamie Wilkes – but the latter didn’t connect properly from close range.

Midway through the first period saw Haworth’s corner headed by Scott Delaney – and although goalkeeper Taylor Gullam tipped his effort onto the bar Ben Adams was in the right place to header it over the line.

Moments later Liam Butland went close to an immediate equaliser but he flashed a 25 yard shot just wide of the post.

Man of the Match - Nick Jones with Manderwood representative Daisy PictonRhys Jones then played a one-two with Adams and went through on goal but Gullam did well to deflect his effort wide.

The Swifts went close to equalising as Gareth Finnegan found Paul Miller but he dragged his low shot wide from the edge of the area.

Jimmy Wilkes was denied twice when his shot  was blocked by Nick Jones and another was cleared off the line by Kyle O’Sullivan  before Daniel James blazed his shot over the crossbar.

The Swifts then levelled matters as skipper Ben Steele released danger man Wilkes who calmly slotted past advancing Goodwick goalkeeper Jones. Minutes later Gareth Finnegan agonisingly shot wide and Wilkes was denied a second as man of the match Jones pulled off a cracking save.

Goodwick created the first chance in the second half when Rhys Jones’ well flighted free kick was met at the far post by Scott Delaney who headed into the side-netting.

Tom Jago rounded keeper Gullam with the goal at his mercy but his goal bound shot was miraculously cleared off the line by Liam Butland.

Eleven minutes after the break Goodwick regained the lead with a brilliant right footed edge of the area strike by danger man Dalling which he curled into the far corner.

Daniel James struck a long range effort straight to Nick Jones, before referee Tudor Walters sensibly blew for a quick water break as the heat was taking its toll.

Connor Davies forced a brilliant save from Jones as the Swifts went in search for an elusive equaliser as Goodwick were rock solid at the back with skipper Delaney outstanding alongside Ross Jones.

Winning manager Nigel Delaney of Goodwick UnitedThe Swifts felt they should have been awarded a late penalty when Ben Adams looked to have made contact with Jack Clark inside the box, but referee Walters waved play on. Connor Davies mis hit a close range shot as Goodwick hung on nervously.

Finally, Jimmy Walker picked up the first yellow card of the afternoon before Jimmy Russell was issued a yellow card for dissent and the substitute was sin binned for ten minutes.

Goodwick’s Jake Smith also received a yellow card for clattering Ben Steele. Then deep in stoppage time substitute Jonny Horgan put the result beyond doubt when he struck from just inside the Monkton half with Gullam stranded, and the ball rolled into the net to  send Goodwick into ecstasy.
