Fenton girls triumph in Kwik Cricket Festival
Local primary schools recently gathered at a cold and windy Haverfordwest Cricket Club for the annual Pembrokeshire Girls Kwik Cricket Festival, which was won by the talented young ladies of Fenton Primary School and coached by Mr Matthew Vaughan.
Fenton Results:
Fenton (243 runs) beat Broad Haven (231 runs)
The first game was against Broad Haven with Fenton batting first and scoring a decent total of 243. All the girls chipped in with crucial runs with Kylie Kinsella slogging a couple of big sixes. Some tight bowling coupled with great fielding restricted Broad Haven to 231 runs. This was a welcome relief for the girls who had suffered four straight defeats in last year’s festival.
Fenton (246 runs) beat Tavernspite (204 runs)
The next game was against a strong looking Tavernspite team. The toss was won by Fenton who elected to bowl and restricted the opposition to 204 runs. The standard of bowling, catching and wicket keeping was excellent. Knowing only five runs were needed for victory (as each team starts with a total of 200) the girls batted sensibly and made the Tavernspite team work hard for their wickets. Some clean hitting and smart running between the wickets meant Fenton finished on 246 runs. Courtney Blake and Courtney Edwards batted very calmly in a tidy partnership of 18 runs.
Fenton (234 runs) beat Hook (225 runs)
This was a game severely affected by the weather due to a very heavy hail storm which struck during the Hook innings. Despite this Fenton restricted Hook to 225 runs. Fielding was again good with special praise to Sophie Grehan who did a great job keeping wicket to some very accurate bowling by Cristina Varghese and Erin Wilment.
Fenton (234 for 1) beat Mary Immaculate (232 runs)
It all came down to the very last match where Fenton were pitched against the reigning champions Mary Immaculate. Both teams entered the match with 100% records meaning it was a winner takes all game. Once again some great bowling and fielding by the Fenton girls restricted Mary Immaculate to 232 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. The Fenton innings got off to a steady start with the girls occupying the crease well and not giving away their wickets. It all came down to the final pair of Shannon Hargreaves and Jade Wright who guided Fenton home with some super running between the wickets to finish on 234 – 1.
The Fenton girls received the cup from Matt Freeman and Rick Walton who, as usual, had organised a superb day cricket and Fenton now progress to St Fagans on July 3rd for the South Wales Finals.
