Senior Cup Quarter Final:

Kemp double header helps Neyland beat St Clears in dramatic cup tie

Neyland 3 – St Clears 2
(After extra-time)

Neyland came from behind to beat St Clears in extra time in a thrilling cup tie played at a windy Athletic Ground.

As cup ties goes this was up there as one of the best games of the season, The Saints led 2-0 at half time thanks to Kyran Lewis and Martin Thomas finding the back of the net.

However, the Nomads didn’t throw in the towel and fought back with second half goals through Andrew Kemp and Max Bowman-Davies to force the tie into extra time.

Kemp was on target for his second goal of the tie that gave The Nomads a narrow lead, but there was more drama when the visitors were awarded a penalty, but Will Evans’ well struck effort was brilliantly saved by Nomads’ keeper Patrick Hannon as the hosts nervously clung on for victory.

Division two outfit St Clears came to the Athletic Ground in confident mood, buoyed by their brilliant run in West Wales Intermediate Cup.

Saints open with a screamer

They had nothing to fear against their division one opponents, they got off to a flyer as Kyran Lewis scored with a terrific 20-yard screamer.

The Nomads had their moments as Bowman-Davies and Josh Watts both went close from distance.

On the stroke of half time the visitors added a second, Nathan Evans’ corner fell to Martin Thomas who fired a shot through a crowded area that stemmed from a corner into the back of the net.

Nomads fight back

Despite Neyland having the wind advantage in second period it was always going to be an uphill task to get back into the tie, however they are made of determined stuff and were rewarded when they pulled one back in the 67th minute.

Leon Barrett’s dangerous flighted free kick in the box was met by a bullet six-yard header by defender Kemp which flew in the net.

In the 85th minute The Nomads grabbed a dramatic equaliser. Barrett’s in-swinging corner caused problems in the box, substitute Jay Johnstone’s strike hit the post, from the rebound Bowman-Davies took a touch before he steadied himself to coolly place the ball home. That late goal forced this gripping tie into extra time.

In the 112th minute The Nomads took the lead as Mike Chandler’s corner was met by Kemp who guided his header in the top corner.

Patrick’s dramatic penalty save

That goal proved decisive, but there was one final twist when The Saints were awarded a penalty that Will Evans took responsibility, he struck it firmly, but Patrick Hannon pulled off a terrific save, the keeper dived to his left-hand side before palmed the ball wide.

The Saints felt they should have been awarded another late penalty, but referee David Badger waved away their protests from the bitterly disappointed Saints’ camp.

Neyland will now meet one of the favourites Hakin United in the semi-finals which will be played at the Bridge Meadow with a date to be announced.
