Haverfordwest Blue Lightning, the youth element of Haverfordwest Cricket Club’ newest members in 2016 will be the ‘Blue Lightning Disability’ squad.  In conjunction with Cricket Wales Disability Officer Les Randell the club coaches ran a number of winter indoor sessions alongside Pembroke Dock Cricket Club, introducing cricket to young people and vulnerable adults with disabilities in the community.

Cricket Wales is establishing a pathway for elite players to move into Development Improvement Hubs with the ambition of representing their Country and  Les Randell spoke of the enthusiasm shown in Pembrokeshire to include all people in the game of cricket, where Haverfordwest have become sector leaders in providing a stimulating and energetic environment which welcomed these newest players and their family.

Passionate belief from coaches

The coaches Haverfordwest have are individuals who are passionate and driven to ensure that all ability levels are included at their sessions.  The session planning, work rate and motivation has been infectious in ensuring the Club has established their own team, which will hopefully play games across Wales this season.

Disability lead coach, Jonathan Twigg has led the sessions alongside fellow coach Rick Walton and the club’s head coach, Simon Williams.  Assisting in the sessions for the youngsters were local students Louisa Twigg and Zora Pavarak and the rapport established at sessions contrived to establish a consistent and successful learning environment.

Rich variety of teams on offer

Jonathan Twigg explained,
“Haverfordwest, an Insport and ECB accredited club, prides itself on creating a family environment, both on and off the pitch.  The ‘Blue Lightning’ has teams at U9, U11, U13, U15, U17 and U19 which incorporate all levels of ability into the weekly practice sessions, age group teams and holiday sports camps.

“Alongside the ‘Blue Lightning’ teams the club is also successful at senior level, with four Saturday sides whilst also entering the National T20 & Welsh cups in 2016. The senior indoor league side recently played at the ECB National final held at Lords, which is a first for the oldest club in Wales’.
