Dilwyn Williams - proud to be president of The Scarlets

Dilwyn Williams

Around The Touchline Feature:

Dilwyn Williams is a relatively young president at Pembroke RFC but there is no doubt that his term of office  is not merely as a figurehead because he is still very active in all that goes on at Crickmarren, on and off the field.

In fact, I enjoy a couple of chats with Dilwyn every weekend because he provides us with The Scarlets’ team sheet and details post-match of the score and scorers – and does it in the nice manner that is very much part of his personality.

Relatively late starter

In his own playing days Dilwyn was a relatively late starter at the age of 25 but he still enjoyed 15 seasons because he played until he was 40.

“I went up to watch a game at Crickmarren where my old school pal Clive ‘Tosh’ Rowlands was playing and was asked if I fancied a game so I went along to training and really enjoyed it.

“I started in the second XV, had quite a long spell of first team rugby and then when the old knees started to hurt I finished off back in the seconds – before I took on the role of team manager when Ossie Boswell was coach and it was nice to still be involved with a great set of boys.

Still working hard behind the scenes

“I’m also back as team manager now, working with Geraint Lewis and Ieuan Matthews as coaches, Seamus Wiseman as captain and Darrell Willington and Ian Martin as outstanding chairman and secretary respectively.

“Now I’ve been given the ultimate honour in the club to serve as president and I’m trying hard to live up to the fantastic efforts shown by those who have gone before me in the past 125 years.

“I have huge respect for those I’ve been honoured to know alongside some great characters like Eifion Powell, Johnny Jones and Glyn Cook, who were both district reps on the WRU, the Lewis brothers, the Colley boys and Dai Williams, to name just a few of very many over the years.

I’m sure that those who have sadly passed away will be looking down with a smile at the way that Pembroke RFC continues to build on their tremendous work and have Dilwyn Williams as president, because he is a pleasure to know and work with – and a great man to chat to on the touchline at Crickmarren as an added bonus!
