Haverfordwest County 1 – Monmouth Town 0

Dale Griffiths’ late header earned Haverfordwest County a crucial win against Monmouth Town at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.

Earlier in the season the Bluebirds won 2-0 at Monmouth Town, so this vital victory at home earned them the double over the visitors. This clash had nil-nil written all over it, but with eight minutes remaining the Bluebirds finally broke the deadlock. Kieron Howard’s teasing corner in the box was met by a powerful header by skipper Griffiths that flew into the back of the net to secure three precious points.

This victory moved Wayne Jones’ Bluebirds outfit up to fourth in the table, five points behind leaders Cardiff Ely and three points behind second placed Penybont. Haverfordwest County still have an outside chance of gaining promotion, but they can’t afford any more slip ups with five games of their season to play.

Chances missed

Goal chances were limited in a match that lacked quality, shortly after half time and Greg Walters struck a close range volley over the crossbar, Owen Thomas scuffed a shot narrowly wide, Chris O’Sullivan’s shot cum cross from distance hit the bar, Jordan Follows dragged a right footed shot past the right hand post.

At the other end Elliott Ford struck a low drive across the face of the Bluebirds’ goal, Elliott Evans hit the woodwork and Craig Morris pulled off a stunning late save to deny Nick Harrhy.

Heads you win

But the crucial goal was scored in the 82nd minute by Griffiths, and this has kept his team in the hunt for promotion back to the Welsh Premier.
