Ashish Jayes - excellent county debut for Fishguard and Goodwick all-rounderPembroke County went down to defeat against a strong MCC team selected from across Wales and beyond - but the county selectors deserve praise for giving several talented youngsters the chance to gain valuable experience at this higher level.

And another welcome addition to the county team was all-rounder Ashish Jayes, who plays in the second division for Fishguard & Goodwick but showed what a great asset he is to them with bat and ball, coming on as first replacement in the bowling stakes and producing a neat cameo spell.

But his batting certainly impressed even more as he played an array of shots in the No 4 berth and was top scorer, sadly missing out on a deserved 50 as he was adjudged lbw, with five boundaries and three big sixes.

MCC show how to build a big total

The MCC elected to bat first and demonstrated the value of solidly building towards a big final score with just 49 runs in their first 10 overs, progressing to 92 by the half-way mark - and then plundering 151 mor runs as they launched their counter-inoffensive where over 90 runs were scored in their final ten overs.

Leading the way was opener Harry Everett, whose patient 74 before he was run out late on, contained 11 fours and a six.

Charlie Arthur claimed the wickets of Chris Ansell (22) and Jamie Strickland (24) as they looked set but James Joseph Davies contributed 50 in good time off 44 balls and including seven fours.

Ross Hardy brought about an early end to the innings of Tyler and Cutlan but that simply brought Dan Lewis to the crease and he plundered 40 in only 17 balls, including three fours and three sixes - leaving the county to face a big score after a scrumptious tea sponsored by County Club president Trefor Evans.

County openers make impressive starts

County openers Harry Nicholas and Paul Murray started in a positive mode as the youngster stroked five boundaries in the first three overs and Murray’s power allowed him to catch up so that they reached 71 before Nicholas departed or a promising 31,

Then Murray took over the lead role and sped to 45 as he looked ready for a big score. His last three scoring shots were sixes off Jamie Strickland and with three balls remaining to claim ‘a six sixes in an over’ scenario he danced down the track but was neatly stumped by keeper Chris Custan!

Middle order lose their way

Kyle Quartermaine had started to look in confident mode as he was joined by Ashish Jayes and runs flowed as the latter started to show his attacking flair - but Quartermaine was adjudged lbw, a decision that was a long time coming.

Sadly, Charlie Arthur and Griff Jenkins came and went so that the County slumped from 113 for 2 to 123 for 5 in quick time before Ross Hardy and John Mansbridge redressed the balance a little but when they departed it was downhill to defeat for Pembrokeshire - but they had played their part in a competitive but entertaining annual fixture that was a credit to both teams!
