County based members of the Scarlet’s U16, U18, U18 Girls, Women's and Scarlet Academy members were invited to a special reception at County Hall by Pembrokeshire County Council’s Chairman, Councillor Arwyn Williams.

The aim is development

The high performing players are among the 140 county youngsters on the WRU Player Pathway, whose squads train regularly at Haverfordwest Sports Centre in preparation for national competitions

The aim of the Pathway is to identify and develop future potential players for the Scarlet’s region and WRU national teams - while also raising standards at school and club level.

Great support from rugby fraternity

County Council recognition for young rugby players!Joining Cllr Williams was Johnny Llewhellin, the WRU Development Officer for the county, Cllr Peter Morgan, the former British Lion, who regaled the audience with stories of his playing days alongside the likes of Ray Gravell, and Cllr Mike John, who played for Llangwm for many years and is the current Wasps’ chairman. Ben Field, the manager of Sport Pembrokeshire, was also there to support the special evening, whilst another well-known guest was Gareth Jenkins, the Wales and Llanelli flanker who later coached the Scarlets and Wales, and is now the Development Officer for the Scarlets.

‘Pathway Scheme’ outlined

He outlined the ‘Pathway Scheme’ in his inimitable style and spoke to small groups about his vision for rugby development in this area. Eifion Roberts, who started his rugby in Pembrokeshire as a nine year old in Newport Pembs, and who is now the Scarlets’ Academy conditioning coach, was also there

Cllr Williams was delighted by the support for the evening and the attendance of so many well known people with a rugby connection completed a very special evening for the pick of local young players.
