County big hitters get out at key times

PCCC pose before taking on the MCC

Pembroke County Cricket Club Friendly:

Pembroke County Cricket Club (147 all out) lost to MCC (175 for 9) by 28 runs

Umpires: Chris Stapleton & Jonathan Twigg
Scorers: Julie Davies (Carew) & John Davies (Felinfoel)
Venue: Carew Cricket Club

The Pembroke County Cricket Club battled hard against the MCC but in the final analysis they ran out of batsmen with six overs still left and went down by 28 runs – and their cause certainly wasn’t helped by the fact that they lost a key run-maker in Patrick Bellerby as he dislocated and probably broke a finger whilst taking a catch, leaving Neyland to hope he can recover in time for the Harrison-Allen Bowl Final in five weeks’ time.

Bellerby is rightly regarded as one of the best fielders in the county but as he went to take a catch to shift Daniel Williams (21) he was clearly in a lot of pain, although he held on to claim the catch, and took no further part in the game.

MCC top score Ansell hails from Carew

There was also a great deal of interest from locals around the Carew boundary because home all-rounder James Hinchliffe reduced the MCC to 8 for 2 as he removed Ben Edkins and Owen Alsop for 4 runs apiece – but then up to the plate stepped Gareth Ansell, who plays for Chepstow, and whose father Barry was a very fine player with The Rooks in his younger days.

Gareth top scored with an excellent 73 which included nine boundaries before he was caught by Toby Hayman off Jon Pawlett. Ace run-maker Sam Pearse, who has played four times for Glamorgan, could only muster a single before he was run out but there were supporting contributions from JJ Davies (20), Williams and TH Morgan (13 not out) alongside 26 extras as the MCC finished up with 175 for 9 from their allotted40 overs.

County lose vital wickets at key times

The county team also lost an wicket early as Hinchliffe departed for four runs and Toby Hayman (14) and Kyle Quartermaine (13) departed, the latter having belted a four and big six – but then Kyle Marsh and Charlie Arthur built the best partnership of the innings.

Arthur reached 31 to confirm his potential, including three fours and a six, whilst Marsh again demonstrated his power hitting as he launched four balls straight over the boundary rope alongside two fours in his excellent 45.

But from then on the MCC bowling attack got on top to limit Jon Pawlett (14), Brad McDermott-Jenkins (0), Lewis Hough (7) and Andrew Pawlett (0) and leave skipper Sean Hannon stranded on 6 not out as the absence of Bellerby obviously had an earlier impact – but credit to Corey Hall (Carew) for his fielding as 12th man and doing very well!
