Charlene is crowned Welsh Elite lightweight champion

Charlene is crowned Welsh Elite lightweight championCharlene Jones produced one of the best performances of her boxing career to be crowned Welsh Elite lightweight women’s boxing champion in Cardiff.

The lightweight boxer from Pembroke Dock who boxes out of Merlins Bridge ABC, gained sweet revenge by defeating the much-fancied Rebecca Price, of Torfaen, in the Welsh Elite Championships, staged in Cardiff.

She overcame a very experienced opponent in Price, who has captained her country in 2010 at the World Women’s championships and was crowned Welsh champion in 2011 and 12, the only surprise being that the decision was split rather than unanimous, when Charlene was clearly on top. Price had previously beaten Charlene several times - but could not stop the all-action Jones bringing the title back to Pembrokeshire

A giant step forward

This compelling victory has undoubtedly helped the orthodox-style local boxer to take a giant step towards competing at this year’s Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Scotland this summer.

Trainer Graham Brockway said: “I’m delighted for Charlene. She had to overcome the mental block of beating Becky. Was great value for victory and now this will give her the confidence to keep moving forward.”

“This terrific victory has put her on track to representing Wales at the Games and ultimately a place on the GB Boxing Olympic programme.

“I’d love it if someone or a business would sponsor her,” added Brockway. “She has the potential and ability to go a long way, but needs financial support.”
