A welcome visitor to the Victoria Book Shop in Haverfordwest on Saturday was Carolyn Hitt, the well-known sports journalist, author and broadcaster, who was signing her superb new book, ‘Welsh Rugby in the 70s’.
Based on the format enjoyed by the likes of ‘The Tiger’ and ‘Roy of the Rovers’ in Christmas annuals of the 50s, 60s and 70s, the book is visually pleasing from the front cover on, is packed with fantastic pictures of the icons of that amazing Welsh rugby team of the 70s, discusses all the issues in the oval-ball game – and also looks at the social and economic events that marked the decade..
In what is almost a full walk down Welsh Memory Lane, Carolyn has relived the time of Gareth Edwards, Barry John, Gerald Davies, JPR Williams et al in conjunction with Max Boyce’s great songs, Gren’s cartoons and John Hughes’ ‘Groggs’!
Born in the rugby hotbed of the Rhondda (in Llwynypia), and now living in Canton, Cardiff, Carolyn’s writing skills amply demonstrate just why she was the first woman to win the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame Journalist of the Year.
A hard-backed book priced at only £14.99, ‘Welsh Rugby in the 70s’ would make the perfect Christmas present for anyone lucky enough to hail from that era, but also for the younger generation who would relish finding out what Welsh rugby was like in its amateur days as part of the backbone of our Welsh culture.
Copies signed by Carolyn Hitt are still available at the Victoria Book Shop so get along there now, so that you don’t miss the chance of making someone happy this Christmas with the ideal present!
