2023 Alec Colley Cup Final:
Llangwm 2nds (58 all out & 103 all out) lost to Carew 2nds (132 for 4 & 37 for 2) by 8 wickets
Umpires: Rob Bellerby & Steve Alford
Scorers: Janice Brick (Llangwm) and Julie Davies (Carew) – two excellent statisticians!
Venue: Treleet Ground, Pembroke Cricket Club – which looked a picture!
Man of the Match: Barry Evans (Carew) – who is still talking about his catches!
Adjudicator: Steve Blowes (Hon Secretary, Pembroke County Cricket Club)

Carew 2nds were able to field an immensely experienced second team for this final and although their counterparts from Llangwm deserve every credit for battling hard they were already 74 adrift at tea and did well to force their opponents to bat for a second time, albeit with a limited target which they achieved in only 4.3 overs.
Llangwm soon in trouble against Brindley and Evans
Carew skipper Haydn Shapcott won the toss and asked Jonathan Clout to bat first – and Llangwm were soon in trouble against the dynamic duo of Max Brindley and Barry Evans as they shared seven wickets for just 35 runs.
Brindley, bristling with pace had Huw Brock (5) caught by keeper Tom Scourfield and Sion Jenkins claimed 1 for 15 whilst Evans lobbed up his ‘pies’ at the other end to bamboozle Llangwm to such an extent that he ended up with 4 for 22 from his five overs, including top scorer Ewan Griffiths (14).
Mike Williams was run out and then Brindley returned to action but needed only two balls of his fourth over to bowl Dan Morgan and Ashley Blayden and return figures of 3 for 13 as only ‘Mr Extras’ managed double figures alongside Griffiths as Llangwm were shot out for only 58 in 16.2 overs.
Carew cruise to a big score
Carew then set about obtaining the big score they needed to kill off any hopes of a come-back via Tom Scourfield and Scott Richards, who had three fours in his 18 before he was bowled by Toby Asson with 40 runs already on the board in six overs.
Nick Scourfield joined his namesake Tom in raising the tempo even further so that they were already in front at the half-way stage before both fell to James Lewis (2 for 33), who showed he could also bowl ‘pies’ as he took a good one-handed return catch to shift Nick (24) and then Tom (46, including six boundaries) from a boundary catch,
Ian Sefton, another top batsman in his time, hit the only six of the innings alongside two fours and ended up undefeated on 23 - and Jacob Knox chipped in with 7 before was caught by Dan Morgan off Mike Williams (1 for 32) as 14 extras took them to an imposing tally of 132 for 4.
Llangwm show battling spirit in their second innings . . .
After a superb tea supplied by Pembroke Ladies, Llangwm set about an improvement on their first innings total and after losing the early scalps of Ewan Griffiths (6), Huw Brock (12) and James Lewis (1) a stand of 44 by Shaun Waller and Johnny Palmer was sadly ended when the latter was run out for 18.
Waller (19) eventually gave a return catch to Evans, and no-one else managed double figures as George Waters, Rhys Grigg and Sion Jenkins also got on the list of wicket-takers but again it was Brindley (3 for 22) and Evans (3 for 21) who did the bulk of the damage as Llangwm totalled a battling 103 all out 18.5 overs.
But not enough to trouble Carew’s might batting machine
Tom Scourfield has always been known as a batsman who likes to get on with things and he did just that in the game’s fourth innings, striking four boundaries en-route to 24 before he was caught by Callum Jenkins off Toby Asson (1 for 15).
Co-opener Scott Richards joined Scourfield soon afterwards with the game won and it was left to old hands Nick Scourfield and Ian Sefton to guide Carew to victory.
The post-match presentations were made by Trefor Evans, the president of the Pembroke County Cricket Club and he did his usual excellent job of making all the necessary thank-yous before Haydn Shapcott deservedly received the fine trophy from him –
and the loudest cheer of the entire afternoon came when Steve Blowes announced the evergreen Barry Evans as the man of the match!
