Llangwm 0 – Haverfordwest 32

Division Three West A league leaders Haverfordwest romped to a deserved bonus point six-try victory over derby rivals Llangwm, to retain the Bishop Cup in front of a decent crowd at Pill Parks on Boxing Day.

The Wasps put in a decent shift in the first half, and they had the upper hand in the scrummaging department, despite trailing by a solitary breakaway try from Blues centre Laurence Hancock.

In the second half the Blues turned the screw as they got on top and their superior fitness told,
The Blues pack led by man of the match No8 Jon Mason, started to find gaps in the Wasps’ defence, and they were rewarded when hooker Jamie Zambas crashed over from close range for an unconverted try.

Minutes later and the visitors added a brilliantly worked third unconverted try. Quick ball released by scrum half Tom Parry, saw outside half Jones feed centres Dan Richards and Laurence Hancock in acres of space, who in turn released full back Lee Summons who galloped clear to dive in at the far corner.

As the game opened up, second row Michael Griffiths broke clear from 20 metres out to dive over for try number four underneath the posts. Mikey Jones converted as the visitors stretched their lead to 22 points.

The Wasps were determined to get back in the clash and through their pack with skipper Aled Morgan, James Lewis, Dave Lewis, Nick Phillips and Ian Griffiths standing out. The Wasps thought they had scored, but referee Tony Pratt awarded a five-metre scrum as the home outfit failed to ground the ball on the try line.

But that’s as close as the Wasps came t
o scoring  with fly half Jones scampering over for try number five and late on winger Scott Candler grabbed the sixth try.

Before the game both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of former Haverfordwest second row Mike Griffiths, who sadly died aged 66 last week. Mike played first class for Bridgend, Swansea, Llanelli and featured in Maesteg’s historical 10-10 draw with New Zealand Maoris in 1982, and he won a Wales B Cap against France B in Pontypool Park in 1979.

Seven try Christmas joy for on fire Otters

Championship

Narberth 43 – Glynneath 3

There was plenty of Christmas joy at the Lewis Lloyd Ground on Boxing Day as Narberth crossed for seven tries without reply and picked a thoroughly deserved bonus point victory against Glynneath.

Blues retain Bishop Cup with six-try romp over Wasps and big Boxing Day win for OttersThe Otters build-up a 19-3 lead at half time at the Lewis Lloyd Ground, and coaches John Dodd and Sean Gale will be pleased that their defence was like Scrooge on Christmas Day, as they didn’t concede a try.

After a dominant scrum and good second phase ball saw prop Jamie Kaijaks power over for the first try that was converted by Nick Gale.

On the 20 minute mark No8 Lewis Wood crashed over for try number two. The visitors replied through a well taken penalty by Lloyd Thomas.

But the Otters had the final say of the half when some excellent handling in the backs resulted in full back Johnnie Morgan cantering over for the third try, converted by Gale.

Uncontested scrums

After the break there were uncontested scrums, but this didn’t stop The Otters from scoring freely. Full back Morgan crossed for his second try of the match, which Gale converted to make it 24-3.

Replacement prop Ollie Evans spotted a gap and ploughed over from close range, again Gale converted. Minutes later flanker Pat Roberts was on hand to add an unconverted sixth try.

However, The Otters still had time to add a seventh score when replacement prop Evans grabbed a try brace, and Gale completed the scoring by landing the conversion.
