Haverfordwest County 1 - Aberdare Town 3

After 14 unbeaten league matches Haverfordwest completed a miserable hat-trick of losses with a disappointing performance in a deserved home defeat against Aberdare Town.

The Bluebirds lacked sparkle or conviction and even the most die-hard home supporter would have to say that Aberdare were deserved victors in a match where salt was really rubbed into their wounds by dint of the fact that former players Terry Evans and James Bradford played key roles for the visitors. Left back Evans superbly organised their defence as captain – and Bradford opening the scoring after only six minutes with a veritable screamer of a shot from almost 30 yards out which flew past Chris Curtis in the Haverfordwest goal.

Haverfordwest employed striker Tim Hicks to man-mark Richard French, regarded as a potent force for Aberdare, but whilst Hicks did a useful job in the first half it meant that they had to fBluebirds beaten for third time in a roworsake a little strike power as Joe Leahy battled alone down the middle and Steff Williams tried to probe wide out.

Williams equalises

It was Williams who levelled matters for the Bluebirds from a 19th minute corner taken by Luke Borelli on the left. Williams might be the smallest player for the Bluebirds but he stole in unnoticed to plant a firm header past Tom Bradley.

The home side had another chance after full back Antonio Faccuttio and Williams combined but Borrelli fired high over the bar from just outside the box. But chances were few and far between as the Bluebirds’ midfield tried to his long diagonal balls to release Williams but were easily snuffed out by Evans, Aaron Jewell and Jordan Coles.

What a volley

It was a similar story after the interval as Aberdare always looked the more likely to score and they finally took the lead after Hicks had stumbled near his own area and Sam Rodon had to concede a corner. From the resulting pressure Sam Small chested down Lewis Holder’s in-swinger at the far post and sent a left foot volley past the stranded Curtis.

Haverfordwest gave a run out to Rob Morgans, back from Newcastle Emlyn, and youth striker Liam Fawcett but the game was finally sealed when Ritchie Evans got in a cross which Small did well to half volley into the net and confirm Aberdare Town as worthy winners and leave the Bluebirds, until recently looking Premier League candidates, beginning to look also rans!
