Best Performances of the Weekend - 10th August 2024
1. Simon Stanford (Saundersfoot 2nds v Laugharne)
Simon Stanford couldn’t have staked a better claim to be included in the Saundersfoot team for the Harrison-Allen Bowl Final than he did here when he had to leave a little early for work and so played in the seconds in the fourth division against league leaders Laugharne – and belted his fourth century ever as he batted throughout thee 40 overs and finished with a monster 174 not out.
Simon was dropped in the second over, when he was on four, and made Laugharne pay heavily as his left-handed stroke play earned him 22 fours and seven big sixes as his team finished on 272 for 8 before bowling out Laugharne for 153. Then it was off to work his night shift and I bet he was a bit stiff before he got home the next morning!
2. Andrew Pawlett (St Ishmaels v Neyland)
The biggest shock of the day in local cricket came as St Ishmaels hauled themselves out of the bottom two in the top echelon with a 70-run hammering of league leaders Neyland – and the undoubted architect of their paltry 30-all out total was canny left-arm slow bowler Andrew Pawlett as he claimed 6 for 14, with support from Brennan Devonald and Steve Williams as they shared the rest of the wickets.
For a long time, we believed that Andrew was one of the most under-rated cricketers in the first division but he has become a county player with his bowling ,supported by the ability to score quickly as a massive hitter of a cricket ball. He is as modest a cricketer as they come and we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk delighted to see the way he is playing now!
3. George Waters (Carew v Llangwm)
George Waters was mentioned a few weeks ago and he was at it again with his bowling exploits helping Carew slam Llangwm by over 200 runs after Rhys Davies, Tim Hicks and co had scored runs aplenty before George struck with a vengeance after tea. After two overs he had figures of 4 wickets without a run against his name and then ended up with 5 for 6 in 5.3 overs, three of them maidens.
Ironically, George was hit for a four and bowled two wides, a fact pointed out by his father Kerry in the bar later – and he even had the cheek to ask his son if he had dropped what looked like a difficult diving catch at one stage. Never mind George, his father means well and you could always ask him if in his 30+ years of bowling for Carew he ever had such superb figures in the top echelon!
4a. Jack Nicholas (Herbrandston v Llechryd)
Twins Jack and Harry Nicholas, plus dad Paul, are integral to Herbie’s success in the second division this season, with Harry as their most consistent batsman and Paul taking a few wickets – but in Saturday’s comfortable win against Llechryd it was Jack who caught the eye as he batted really well for his top score of 90 in 79 balls as he shared a huge partnership of 135 with talented youngster Charlie Malloy.
Jack struck 10 fours and two sixes before he fell to Tom Lewis with the score in 211. It is good to see all the Nicholas family doing so well as Paul claimed 2 for 19 and harry chipped in with 21 runs in their victory by 113 runs which keeps them just ahead of Burton as both certs for promotion.
4b. Charlie Malloy (Herbrandston v Llechryd)
The other principal run-maker for Herbie was talented teenager Charlie Malloy, who shared an opening stand of 69 with Harry Nicholas and then the afore-mentioned big partnership with Harry’s brother Jack. Charlie also opened the bowling for Herbie and his five accurate overs cost him only 15 runs before Dean John and canny skipper Robbie Hood grabbed three wickets apiece. Charlie’s father Dai is a hard worker on and off the field for Herbie but he would be the first to admit that Malloy junior certainly has the edge when they step out on to the cricket field!
5. Aled Phelps (Hook v Johnston)
Aled Phelps is one of the youngest captains in the top two echelons of local cricket and he certainly led Hook by example as they smashed neighbours Johnston by 223 runs.
He belted 11 fours and 7 sixes in his 134 and shared in a stand of 199 with younger brother Rhys (who stroked a classy 64 not out in his supporting role) and although he told this old-timer at tea that he was ‘very tired’ (not quite his words!) he still had enough energy left to claim a fantastic haul of 6 for 8 afterwards. Well done Aled!
6. Gavin Campbell (Burton 2nds v Hook 2nds)
There is only two points between Cresselly 2nds, Burton 2nds and Stackpole at the top of Division Three and someone who really helped keep Burton in contention on Saturday was Gavin Campbell, with lots of runs and a good bowling stint in their 7-wicket victory over their counterparts from Hook.
Gavin topped the batting with a boundary-laden 75 runs and then claimed 2 for 27 after tea – and his Burton colleagues be hoping the in-form all-rounder will be available for the rest of their matches!
7. Robson Walkey (Hundleton versus Llangwm 2nds)
There were several excellent individual performances as Hundleton moved to the top of Division Four with a huge win over a depleted Llangwm side as half centuries by Craig Williamson, Evan Davies alongside runs from Ben Adams launched them towards a massive 273 for 7 before Robson Walkey took over with the ball and ran through the opposition.
He claimed a career-best haul of 8 for 21 at Pill Parks as poor old Johnston were shot out for 26 and victory by 247 runs, surely the biggest-ever margin achieved by Hundleton in their league history!
8. Madoc Evans (Carew 3rds v Pembroke Dock 2nds)
Madoc Evans also produced an excellent bowling performance as The Rooks 3rds had arguably the quickest win of the day as they shot out The Dock 2nds for 26 and then won by 10 wickets as he picked up a cracking 6 for 9 haul alongside a good spell by Rhys Grigg. Maddoc comes from a Tenby family better known for rugby and he is, at 15, already doing well there to follow his dad Mike and grandfather Lloyd, but he is already well-thought of at Carew and we are sure to hear lots more of him in the summer sport. Then Jac Scourfield hit a comfortable16 not out to ease Carew home, as he is following another family dynasty of father Nick and granddad Tony.
9. Rhys Power (Herbrandston 2nds versus Whitland 2nds)
Rhys Power showed what a useful all-rounder he has become with an excellent all-round performance at Whitland that he helped his side to the top of the Division Five table as Crymych lost at Haverfordwest.
Rhys topped the batting with 69 alongside Tom Philpott (51) and then grabbed 4 for 23 alongside a useful spell by another youngster in Dillon Lewis, and completed a good day for the club as they now have both teams top of their respective divisions!
10. Mudit Jain (Haverfordwest 4ths v Llechryd 3rds)
And finally, this week, congratulations to Mudit Jain on his match-winning all-round performance as Haverfordwest 4ths beat Llechryd 3rds in the only match in Division Six.
Mudit played lots of cricket in India until 2018, when his studies took over, but he showed he had lost none of his touch in this match as he scored 87 runs to go with a half century by Jason Phillips – and then took 3 for 5 alongside 2 for 11 by ‘Mr Reliable’ Richard Davies before returning to his duties as a doctor in the Accident & Emergency department of Withybush Hospital.
