Amazing Grace seals silverware for Taf Tigers

WRU U16 Plate Winners- Taf Tigers

Welsh Girls Under 16s Plate Final:

Taf Tigers 22  - Cardiff Quins 21

Taf Tigers receive the U16 PlateGrace Fuller was the toast of her Taf Tigers under 16 rugby team mates as her last-gasp conversion snatched victory from their counterparts in Cardiff Quins – and captain Alice Morgan received the coveted silverware in front of her teams, their families and other supporters aplenty from Whitland  at The Principality Stadium.

Grace had found herself in a similar situation just five days before, when The Tigers made the long trek to Merionethshire to play Cobra and produced a performance of total commitment and lots of skill as the scoresheet remained blank until the final moments of a nerve-wracking contest when The Tigers were awarded a penalty and she stepped up to calmly stroke the kick between the posts to take The Tigers into their huge day in Cardiff.

It was a fitting reward for the whole squad and coach Nicole Davies, and there was understandable excitement at their hub, which has 123 members in the age groups from under eight up to under 18 which is expertly run by Sue Davies, who has been in charge of ladies’ and girls’ rugby in Whitland for 19 years, as well as being Hon Secretary of the town’s men’s rugby teams.

Early start on a special day

They soon had the arrangements in order as The Tigers left Whitland at 7am because they were in the first final of three on the day, which started 1t 10.30am.

The match against Cardiff Quins, who had relatively little travel and much more preparation time on the day and it proved to be a real battle as the lead changed hands several times.

The Quins had some excellent finishers but The Tigers kept plugging away and scored tries by Rhiannedd Green, Sophie Lewis and Sebrina Semaani, but still found themselves six points adrift with the stadium clock showing time was almost up.

The Tigers really applied pressure in a series of concerted drives and although The Quins tried hard to try to hold them out there was a powerhouse score from second row Elin Morris to leave a nerve-jangling conversion attempt for victory – and Grace Fuller sent the ball unerringly on target and The Tigers’ camp rightly celebrated a wonderful victory.

The entire Tigers’ group eventually made their way back to the Whitland RFC clubhouse and they somehow found the energy to sing and dance the time away until about 8pm, when tired 16-year-olds went home safe in the knowledge that they had created a little bit of history for rugby in the Whitland area which they can rightly be very proud of!
