Hook ladies called upon all their reserves of grit and commitment to beat their counterparts from Burton, who were left to reflect that they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in an absorbing and entertaining final.
It proved to a game of real contrasts in the batting stakes as both teams posted high first-innings totals but collapsed after tea against good bowling and tight fielding – before Hook emerged victorious as Burton were dismissed for 50.
In the final analysis it took fine bowling spells from Alice Thomas and 12 year old Megan Lepetit to see Hook home as Burton ended up five tantalising runs short, with the former bowler breaking the back of the Burton powerhouse batting and the latter coming on late to claim a fantastic hat-trick that belied her inexperience.
Great starts for both teams
Put in to bat first, Hook reached a healthy 113 for 2 after their key batters Jo Kerrison and Sam Rossiter put on 98 for the first wicket before Rossiter was bowled by Ffion Ashman for 46. Kerrison batted throughout the innings for her undefeated 53 against Ashman and Rebecca Jones, who both finished with figures of 1 for 18.
Burton also made a great start to their reply with an opening stand of 87 by Ffion Ashman (47) and Finola Scale (48 not out), assisted by a quick 22 not out from Wella Scale. Alice Thomas (1 for 24) was the only successful Hook bowler as Burton ended up on 134 for 1, a solid lead of 21 runs at tea.
Batting collapses against good bowling
Kerrison (17) and Rossiter (20) gave Hook a steady start with 30 runs but when they departed in quick succession only Alice Thomas (12) and Jemma Phillips (12 not out) managed double figures as they limped to 75 for 5 against Lily Thomas (2 for 17), Rebecca Jones (1 for 16) and Wella Scale 91 for 20) as the successful Burton bowlers.
Burton looked hot favourites at this stage but Finola Scale was run out in the first over from a direct hit by Millie Thomas, and with Thomas causing problems in her 3 for 13 stint they lurched to 6 for 3 and were in real trouble at 19 for 5 before Rebecca Jones (13) and Steffi Campbell (12) gave them some breathing space.
Hook bowlers strike hard for victory
At this stage either side could have picked up the silverware but then Megan Lepetit struck three times in as many balls, Jemma Phillips claimed a wicket to go with her three excellent catches out of eight taken in the innings, Leanne Jones supported with 2 for 11 and Hook edged through.
Alice Thomas was chosen as player of the match and Hook were clearly delighted to win an excellent final that was a great advert for Ladies’ Cricket before League Chairperson Dian Thomas undertook the presentation of the medals by Andrew Thomas, of sponsors G Thomas & Son.
