Pembrokeshire Under 10s (168 for 9) lost to Mid Glamorgan Under 10s (179 for 4)

Those present at Neyland CC on Sunday 14th June were treated to a fantastic game of cricket provided by the Pembrokeshire Under 10s and their counterparts from Mid Glamorgan.

In a 35-over per team contest on an excellent pitch nearly 350 runs were scored with both teams showing total commitment in the field, with high quality catching and ground fielding.

Mid Glamorgan batted first and posted a massive 179 for 4 in their 35 overs. Aled Balham (105 not out) was deservedly applauded from the field by everyone present after he had carried his bat for a sparkling century, but the Pembrokeshire boys may feel they should have pouched his wicket early in his innings, when a difficult catch was put down.

Balham went on to score freely with a range of attacking shots all around the wicket and he was well supported by Sam Humphreys (21) and Spencer Morgan (14 not out). The Pembrokeshire bowlers stuck to their task with Jacob Owen (2 for 15), Evan Watts (1 for 9) and Seth Willington (1 for 15) picking up the wickets, whilst Joe Phillips (0 for 10) bowled an excellent spell without reward.

Lewis and Evan lead Pembs run chase

The pressure was clearly on from the start for the Pembrokeshire batters to chase 180 to win but Lewis Miller (49) batted superbly at the top of the order, sharing profitable partnerships with Dominic Asson, Seth Willington and particularly Evan Watts (54). Miller batted for 23 overs, providing his team with a fantastic foundation to push for victory but falling agonisingly one run short of a deserved half century. Watts came to the middle and unleashed some powerful shots that began to take the game away from Mid Glamorgan, reaching a fabulous half century with a typically belligerent pull shot.

When Miller departed Jacob Owen (15) joined Watts and played really positively, their partnership taking Pembrokeshire to within 30 runs of victory. The pressure was now on the fielding side but the Mid Glamorgan bowlers held their nerve and in the final few overs Pembrokeshire lost five wickets chasing boundaries, ultimately falling 11 runs short on 168 for 9. So ultimately a deserved victory for Mid Glamorgan with Cole Curling (5 for 11) leading the way with good support from Aled Balham (2 for 11) to add to his century.

The clear winner on the day was the game of cricket so credit must go to all of the players and coaches for the standard of cricket and for the spirit in which the game was played, typified by the Pembrokeshire team all running in to congratulate Aled Balham on his century. A fantastic advert for junior cricket!

The next match for the under 10s is away to West Glamorgan at Pontarddulais on 21st June.
