Leon Luby presses forward for Haverfordwest CountyHaverfordwest County returned to winning ways with a workmanlike display against Goytre United at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.

The home outfit had several key players unavailable, midfielders Elliot Thomas and Tom Dyson were away, plus Jack Wilson is in Rome with the Welsh Schools and has the honour of the vice-captaincy, goalkeeper Stephen Hall had picked up a knock in the midweek defeat at the hands of league leaders Penybont.

Jake was solid

Teenager Jake Merry came in and had a solid performance, Kyle Stuart replaced Hall in goal, and didn’t really have a decent shot to stop.

Ever green Nicky Palmer was tireless in midfield and new recruit Scott Thomas showed some decent touches before he got injured. Ashley Bevan was strong up front with Kaid Mohamed and Ben Fawcett both industrious.

Goytre United came to the Bridge Meadow on the back of five straight wins, and were the in-form team, but full credit to the Bluebirds they played well in the first period and thoroughly deserved their 2-0 cushion at half time.

Eliott Scotcher opened the scoring in the 28th minute, the central midfielder struck a 30-yard pile driver which flew into the back of the net.

In the 34th minute the homesters doubled the lead. Scotcher’s dangerous free-kick in the box was met by a powerful header by skipper Sean Pemberton.

In the second period the game lost its tempo, as the Bluebirds looked to consolidate their two-goal lead.

Thomas limped off

New signing Scott Thomas limped off and was replaced by Fraser Finlay, but the home side didn’t suffer any further scares as they picked up their 12th win of the season and currently sit third in the table three points behind second placed Cambrian and Clydach, but have two games in hand, and are eight points behind leaders Penybont.

“I’m happy with the win and a clean sheet,” said Bluebirds’ gaffer Wayne Jones. “We had a few players missing, but the boys who came in did a fantastic job, I couldn’t have asked for any more.”
