PembrokeshireSport.co.uk is delighted to announce our link with Pembrokeshire County Council’s Leisure Services Department.. since they do such a great job of providing the facilities, help and guidance that not only helps keep people fit but encourages the rest of us to join them in enjoyable activities and exercise that can only be good for us. Over the months we aim to highlight the dedicated staff who work at our superb leisure centres, feature a number of the activities and sports that go on there, and some of the organisations which use our leisure centre facilities. Leading the way at our photo shoot was Cllr Rob Lewis, who amongst his many jobs as a cabinet member of Pembrokeshire County Council is responsible for Sport and Leisure – and really takes part in sport in our county, starting out with his involvement at Narberth with rugby, Lawrenny in Cricket and Carew in football. Cllr Rob is very busy in helping to set up the ‘Iron man’ series which comes to Pembrokeshire soon and it is fair to say that no councillor could be more involved in his role than Rob is. He attends so many functions, no matter how small, and enjoys each one with the friendliness and good humour which marks him as a real boon for sport in our county! |
Chris Payne is Leisure Services Manager and he is responsible for providing most of the indoor sporting facilities in the county, and relishes the challenge of encouraging us as the general public to use them as often as possible. Chris is totally committed to the cause and enjoys working with staff that he appreciates, and the public, whom he seeks to use the outstanding services available. He was heavily involved in the development of the wonderful new leisure centre at Haverfordwest, plus all the other centres since he took over the reins in 1995. His team also look after Beach and Water Safety, the Lifeguard Service (now in a productive partnership with the RNLI), beach flag awards like the Blue Flag accreditation which has seen ten new beaches able to fly the coveted flag, plus the Green Coast award for rural beaches like Abereiddi and Barafundle, awarded in recognition of their pristine condition. It is a lot of work involving a lot of people but very worthwhile. Chris is a former RAF basketball international (being 6 feet 5 inches helps!), a Welsh Masters and Veterans Surfing Champion and a long-boat rower – and still loves keeping fit in the centres’ gyms! As Leisure Services Officer, Gary Nicholas’s principal role is to work with the managers off all the leisure centres in Pembrokeshire to ensure that the service to the public is first class, and one only has to chat to Gary for a short while to see how proud he is of the rich variety of activities that go on, and the quality of the staff who help to provide friendly and efficient service. Gary is very much a ‘hands-on’ sporting person because as well as using the facilities himself he plays rugby and cricket regularly, and used to play football in his younger days with Goodwick United. His cricket has been at Maenclochog and, more recently, Crymych, where he also turns out for the rugby team after previously giving good service to Narberth. He returned to his home county from college in 1997 and was thrilled to become the first-ever manager of Crymych Leisure Centre. He was promoted to his current role in 2005 and readily admits that he loves his work because it is great to be involved with the sporting fraternity – and taking on the challenge of trying to get as many people as possible, to use our Leisure centres! Julie Collings is Leisure Marketing and Development Officer, and someone charged with making sure that the programme available for the public is well organised and out there in the public eye so that people of all ages, from children to pensioners, are aware of the great things on offer. She is perfectly suited for her role because as well as having the outward-going personality so vital for her role she is also a very capable sportswoman in her own right, having deservedly gained a Black Belt in Judo and also becoming heavily involved with judo at county and Welsh level. Just a quick chat to Julie and you couldn’t help but be interested in joining the activities at leisure centres across our county! Ben Field makes up the quintet as Manager of Sport Pembrokeshire, whose officers are dedicated to encouraging sporting participation, especially in schools and amongst the young people of our county. Ben plans to work closely with his four colleagues above and is rightly proud of the dedication shown by his team, who have made a significant impact on sport in Pembrokeshire. Ben is also a very good sporting all-rounder who is a very good batsman with Haverfordwest Cricket Club and a more than useful footballer who had trials with clubs up the line when he was younger.
