Hakin United 0 – Goodwick United 1

 



Will Haworth’s second half header earned Goodwick United a slender victory over arch rivals Hakin United to retain the Jubilee Cup in front of a decent crowd at Marble Hall.
 
The two heavyweights once again went toe-to-toe in the annual Manderwood Pembrokeshire Football League’s curtain raiser which signals the start of a new season.
 
Scott Davies’ Vikings are the current league champions plus they won the West Wales Intermediate Cup for a second successive season whilst joint managers Matt Fox and Niall Kinsella’s Goodwick outfit are the Senior Cup holders.
 
Remarkably it finished with the same score as last season also played the same venue, always played between the Division One champions and Senior Cup holders.

After a cagey opening first half it was Liam Parkes who went closest to breaking the deadlock for Hakin.
 Shortly after the break the lively Parkes was replaced by Scott Ferney who signed in the summer from Tenby.
 
New signing Ben Steele slotted in well in the heart of the Goodwick defence alongside the solid skipper Scott Delaney, Josh Wood and Sion O’Sullivan. Equally the Vikings rear guard of Kieran King, Camron Thomas, Jake Merry and Jay Power were in good form.
 
Goodwick opened the scoring four minutes after the interval wen Nick Jones’ long punt downfield was put out for a corner by Vikings goalkeeper Rory Williams. From the resultant corner taken by Kyle O’ Sullivan it was gleefully headed home at the near post by Haworth.
 
The Vikings had a strong appeal for a penalty when there was a coming together inside the box between Steele and Cameron Brunton, which referee Sion Jenkins definantly waved play on.
 
Vikings' centre back Jay Power put in a timely block to stop 19-year-old Mason Jones adding his name to the score sheet after good build up play between Danny Hopkin and Haworth.
 
Late in the game Delaney made a crucial goal line clearance with his chest as the Phoenix Boys held on for a slender victory.
 
At the post-match presentation Pembrokeshire Football League Chairperson Mackie Harts presented the Jubilee Cup to delighted Goodwick captain Scott Delaney.
 
This game was played in memory of Leon Arundel of St Clears and Mackenzie Pacheco of Clarbeston Road who both passed away last season. All the proceeds chosen by the bereaved families will be split equally between the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Charity and 2Wish.
