2023 Senior Cup Final - Match Officials
Sion Jenkins
Aged 36
Referee
Teacher
Sion is one of the youngest referees to take charge of the final and his selection is recognition for the respect he already has from players and officials with his calm demeanor and ability to make decisions under pressure.
He played first team football as a goalkeeper at Carew, when Mackie Harts was manager, and began his reffing career in December 2015 before another short spell as a player at Lawrenny.
Sion has reffed the fifth division and under 16s cup finals and as assistant referee for the West Wales Cup Final when Craig Templeton was in charge, and Sion’s growing reputation in West Wales was confirmed as he was recently in charge for the other semi-final for this season when Penlan beat St Josephs to gain a place against Hakin United in this season’s final.
He is also a keen cricketer as a fast bowler with Carew after a number of years at Cresselly and has played in a Harrison-Allen Bowl Final as well as winning a league championship medal.
Stefan Jenkins
38
Assistant Referee
Deputy Head Teacher
Stefan is the older brother of Sion and another keen former player for Carew and Lawrenny, and current cricketing all-rounder with Cresselly, where he has played for almost 30 years and has been the club’s Hon Secretary for the past eight years.
He has played in five Harrison-Allen Bowl Finals and had other appearances in the Duggie Morris Final as proof of his cricketing ability. He also coaches Cresselly’s under 11s, 15s, Dynamos and All Stars and in football coaches Lawrennny’s under 8s.
He played as a striker in his football career and took up the whistle about three years ago after a slight hiatus caused by Covid - and regrets the fact that he didn’t start earlier because he has settled in well.
Stef has quickly earned a reputation as a very good match official who has an excellent relationship with players but maintains a firm, quiet control.
Neill Crawshaw
37
Assistant Referee
Head of UK Safety Excellence
Neill took the refereeing course when he was coaching his son Conor and others at Prendergast Villa so that he could officiate their games - and when he finished junior football took up the whistle at senior level.
He has officiated at the Division Four final and run the line at several others - and was given the important role in the West Wales Cup semi-final between Penlan and St Josephs at Garden Village but after a postponement was unable to join Sion and Stef Jenkins when it was eventually played.
In his younger days he had 20 years with The Royal Signals Regiment and played at left back and also played for The Army in rugby and cricket, which he also played for Haverfordwest before becoming an umpire in the summer sport.
He still keeps very fit and so gets about the field as well as any referee could do!
Keith McNiffe
64
Chef
In his 39
th season as a referee in Pembrokeshire.
Keith has officiated in over 60 cup finals in Pembrokeshire and did all the Junior finals in one season. As well refereeing in Pembrokeshire he has been assistant referee on the ‘old Welsh League’ and refereed in the Welsh Reserve League.
Keith’s path into refereeing is down to the late Frankie Donovan, of Pembroke Boro fame, who signed him up for the referees’ course and supplied him with his 1
st kit.
He still uses the half sovereign coin he was given with his 1
st kit to decide ends before a game nowadays. Other than football over the years Keith has played an active role in the West Wales St John’s Ambulance Service serving as co-ordinator for the local area and had a spell as chief marshal for Pembrokeshire Autograss Club.
Jonathan Twigg
56
Reserve Official
Teacher
Jonathan is a very experienced referee who has been in charge of a whole range of finals, including the Senior Cup when Hakin United beat Narberth 2-0 and has also officiated at the youth and other finals in the county.
Other memorable occasions include being the referee at the first West Wales Cup Final at The Liberty Stadium and the last Welsh Youth Cup Final at the old Ninian Park, where Joe Allen played for Swansea in a 1-0 over Cardiff.
Then there have been Welsh and English Schools’ and other age group internationals - and he was Secretary of the Pembrokeshire Referees’ Society for a number of years and chairman in their centenary season.
He has been a West Wales FA instructor and is pleased that his son Harry has also taken up the whistle - and an unfulfilled ambition would be to run the line in a cup game where his son was in the middle!
