Shock Senior Cup exit for Vikings at the Road

Clarbeston Road 2 – Hakin United 1

Clarbeston Road caused a shock first round cup upset as they narrowly defeated one of the favourites Hakin United at Knock Field.

Back in 2018, Hakin heavily defeated Clarby Road 7-1 to lift the silverware on a hot sunny April afternoon, at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium however back in 2023, on a wet sticky pitch the Road pulled off the surprise result of the first round as they unceremoniously dumped the Vikings out of the Cup.

Tom Withers gave Clarby Road the lead, Mark Jones equalised for Vikings before Ben ‘Rocky’ John grabbed a terrific late winner.

After a goalless first period the tie livened up in the second period, the Road opened the scoring in the 69th minute, the Vikings failed to deal with a corner as it fell kindly for Tom Withers to find the back of the net through a crowded area.

The Vikings reacted immediately as they levelled matters, straight from kick off substitute Leon Luby won a corner, an excellent ball in the box was met by a powerful Mark Jones header.

Within two minutes the Road regained the lead as Ben ‘Rocky’ John evaded his marker before the striker tucked the ball past Gareth Fawcett.

The Justin ‘Skinny’ Harding’s Vikings threw everything at the Road in an attempt to get back on level terms but came up against strong resistance.

The Road nearly added a third as a quick counter attack by Ben Clague set up a chance for Jake Booth who struck his shot agonisingly wide.

Sean Edmundson - scored twice for Pennar RobinsCraig Asparassa scored and created two assists as the skipper helped division one Pennar Robins to a comfortable cup passage against division three Pendine at Bush Camp.

The Robins led 4-0 at the break plus added three further goals in the second period to comfortably reach round two.

In the 17th minute the Robins opened their goal scoring account as Sean Edmundson threaded a neat through ball for Asparassa to apply the final scoring touch.

Eleven minutes later Nick Willis chased down a long kick by keeper Rory Williams, a mix-up in defence led to him finding the back of Justin Blewitt’s net.

The Robins continued to press and were rewarded with a third, Connor Willis’ close range header supplied by an inch perfect Asparassa cross.

Man of the match Asparassa added a superb third, a clearance fell to the skipper who unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard volley.

In the 59th minute Edmundson neatly chipped Blewitt for the fifth, Liam Williams added the sixth with the outside of his boot finish, substitute Ross Vincent added the seventh, picked a ball up on the corner of 18 yard box before he drilled a low effort into the far corner.
