Beat the Expert - Week1 : fixtures for 12th November 2011
Little Ben takes a slender lead over the totally shell shocked Expert
Radio Pembrokeshire presenter Ben Stone has taken a narrow 7-6 lead over the shocked Expert. Little Ben also had the audacity to predict the correct score with St Ishmaels beating Goodwick United 2-1 in the Senior Cup. "How can I come second to someone who knows absolutely nothing about local football," said The Expert. "It's definitely beginner's luck - he didn't get one score right in division one - he just got lucky in the cup." The Expert will be looking to pull back the deficit next week. Watch out Little Ben because The Expert doesn’t like coming second.
Little Ben fancies his chances against The Expert
There is a totally new challenger to The Expert this week as Radio Pembrokeshire presenter, personality and general ‘Mr Nice Guy’ Ben Stone takes him on for the first time ever after Chris Tansey, boss at Manderwood’s, fell bravely by the wayside last weekend for the third year in succession.
Ben offered to try his luck in a conversation with Bill Carne on the ‘Friday Night Sports Show’. He said,
“I’d love the chance to take on The Expert because I’m interested in local football and think it is a great idea. I know he seems to beat most people but I’ve been told he has a soft spot and I think that over a four-week period I can edge him out and win that ‘I Beat The Expert’ tee shirt.”
“I have asked him to come on the show with Bill and I on a few occasions but he just growls that he is not fussed on that sort of stuff! Perhaps he’ll come on my programme if a win in his competition!”
The Expert told us,
“I’m sure that this chap Stone is a decent enough bloke, although he does ramble on a bit about Narberth Rugby so he can’t be that knowledgeable about local football. I understand he lives in Carmarthen so I think I will have too much background knowledge for him. I proved that against Mr T, who thought Tenby were playing away to Park Travellers and I knew the game had been switched to Tenby, who won 8-0. Some might think that’s gamesmanship on my part but I believe it’s just putting local info to good use!”
“Anyway, to come back to Little Ben, if he thinks that he will be able to pick Bill Carne’s brain then that is no good either because he’s my buddy and might even be persuaded to plant a few false ‘words of wisdom’ on his trips to Radio Pembrokeshire. I have been asked to go on air at Radio Pembrokeshire but they wouldn’t stump up my regular appearance fee! With a bit of luck Little Ben might even ask Kevin Hire, Thommo or Toby Ellis for some advice – now that will really be making my challenge even easier, because they know even less than he does!”
Remember the format – there is one point for a correct forecast and a bonus point for getting the scoreline correct!”
Little Ben’s Forecasts:
Division One:
Clarbeston Road 3 - Narberth 2
Two sides that will score goals – I expect this one to be close.Johnston 1 - Pennar Robins 3
Again – this is a tough one to call, I will go for Pennar based on a good start.Milford United 4 - Haverfordwest County 3
I expect loads of goals and a close game between the bottom two sides!Senior Cup Second Round:
Carew 1 - Merlins Bridge 5
Carew will fight hard but the Bridge are in great form and will win this one with a bit to spare.Hundleton 2 - Solva 1
A tougher one to predict so I will go with home advantage and tip a Hundleton win by the odd goal in three.Lamphey 1 - Herbrandston 3
Another tight one – but Herbrandston hit four last time out, so I am going to tip them to continue their good form in front of goal.Monkton Swifts 3 - St Clears 0
The Swifts will be happy with their form right now, but St Clears lead the way in Division 3 and will fancy an upset. It won’t happen here though, Swifts to do the business.Neyland 4 - Milford Athletic 2
Goals aplenty in this one and I think Athletic will push Neyland all the way, despite being a division below them. It’s a local derby so chuck the form book away – Neyland will win after a bit of a scare.Pendine 0 - Hakin 9
Hakin love scoring goals and this one will be no different!Prendergast Villa 0 - Tenby 2
The Villa will say home advantage equals a chance of an upset...they will give Tenby a good game, but the first division side should come out on top.St Ishmaels 2 - Goodwick United 1
There will be an upset somewhere – and it could be here! Sorry Bernie...FIXTURES & PREDICTIONS:- (Results to appear here on Saturday evening):
