Fixtures for 5th November 2011
(..to results page for these fixtures..)
Division One (West) caused me grief again last Saturday as I went for Narberth in their clash with Whitland but the Borderers edged home 9-6 to give me tipping grief. I was also wrong with Tenby as I chose them to win at Pontarddulais and they conspired to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory!
Other than that, though I had eight right so that’s not bad going (much better than The Expert and Mr T in the football!)
I’m due to have my mettle tested soon, however, as regular reader Bruce Evans, the former Milford, Haverfordwest and Narberth player who is now comfortably domiciled in France, has challenged me to a four-week tipping test match.
Watch this space for more news!
Division One (West):
Whitland v Carmarthen Athletic
After their gritty win at Narberth last week, Whitland now face another tough local derby, but this time with home advantage against Carmarthen Athletic, who are in fifth place, with five wins and four defeats.
Verdict: The Borderers are back to third place in the table now and I think they should have enough fire power – and resolve – to beat the Athletic at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn!
UWIC v Narberth
Narberth will be looking to bounce back with a win against UWIC in Cardiff but the students are playing well as they have six wins from nine starts to go fourth in the section.
Verdict: What are they doing in the West section anyway – but I think they could edge out the Otters in a high-scoring game, although I hope I’ll be proved wrong!
Swalec Plate – Round One:
Lampeter v Crymych
Crymych will travel to Lampeter looking to make progress in this competition against a side currently seventh in Division Three (West), having won four games out of seven.
Verdict: I hope this will be a nice little diversion for the Preseli Men from the rigours of league rugby – and fully expect them to move into the second round.
Swalec Bowl – Round Two:
Llangadog v St Davids
St Davids will travel to Llangadog looking for a second win on the trot as they play against a team which is seventh in Division Six (West), with two wins and a draw in five starts.
Verdict: A lot depends on how many of their key players are available but if the Saints travel with anything like a full squad they should win this one.
Llansawel v Pembroke
On paper, Pembroke have the easiest tussle of all the Pembrokeshire clubs because Llansawel are bottom of Division Six (West), having picked up just one draw alongside five league defeats so far.
Verdict: The Scarlets are a useful side and I fully expect Ossie Boswell’s Boys to come back from Llansawel with a win in the Carmarthenshire countryside!
Milford Haven v Trinity St David (Lampeter)
It will be interesting to see whether the students from this college near Lampeter have a settled enough side to travel because sometimes in the past they have given the games to the opposition.
Verdict: If the students do turn up it should still be very plain sailing for The Mariners!
Nantgaredig v Neyland
This is a tough match to predict because although Neyland are in Division Four (West) they must travel to Nantgaredig to face a team which is second in division five and has six wins from eight outings.
Verdict: Nantgaredig shocked two Pembrokeshire clubs last campaign and I fear that they could make it a hat-trick here!
St Clears v Fishguard
Arguably the most interesting match of the round as table-topping St Clears entertain third-placed Fishguard in an all-fifth division clash. The Saints have won seven games and drawn against Cefneithin whilst the Seagulls have six wins and one defeat so far, against Cefneithin!
Verdict: I have to go for The Saints, with home advantage!
