Goodwick United showed that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season as they took on Hakin United in a friendly match, arranged in honour of the late John Bailey, and scored six goals whilst conceding just one.

In a match that was played in conditions resembling November, rather than mid-August, Goodwick were strong at the back, incisive in midfield and with a makeshift front two of Patrick Hughes and Karl Headley that repaid manager Bernie Armstrong’s faith in them with four goals between them.

Hughes and Hedley gave Goodwick a deserved 2-0 interval lead, the former with a cracking shot and the latter with a well placed header, but Hakin looked as if they were back in the game shortly after the break as veteran striker Paul Jones put the finishing touch to a move instigated by Ashley Bevan and Kieran Randall.

Goodwick score four in second half

Goodwick restored their two-goal advantage almost immediately as Hughes netted his second and with Anthony Couzens and Steve Blackford ensuring a tight hold on the Vikings’ goal scorers it was Goodwick who made the game safe when Kieran Hedley added his second goal, giving Devonald no chance in the Hakin goal.

Devonald prevented a fifth goal with a brilliant reflex save from a Kieran O’Brien diving header but Goodwick went nap when Steve Lewis was hauled down in the spot and Tom Jones squeezed the spot-kick just outside Devonald’s desperate dive.

Even then Goodwick weren’t finished because Ryan Howells put in a low cross-cum shot to the far post which was going wide but Rob Hedley stretched well to join his brother on the scoresheet – and complete a 6-1 victory for Goodwick before Brian Morris said a few well-chosen words about John Bailey and congratulated Wayne O’Sullivan and his team on their success.
