Evans stars in big police win

Dyfed Powys Police (292 for 5)
beat Surrey Police (123 all out)

Umpire: Dave Morris (Fishguard).

Scorer: Stuart Green (Aberystwyth).

Venue: Cresselly Cricket Club.

A superb 121 not out by Huw Evans helped Dyfed Powys Police, including a strong Pembrokeshire contingent, easily defeat their counterparts from Surrey and move smoothly into the last four of the British Police Cup competition.

Andrew Williams hits a big six.The visitors were most impressed by the facilities at Cresselly after already beating South Wales & Gwent, plus North Wales, in the earlier rounds – but found Evans too hot to handle because the powerful left hander eventually smashed 13 fours and four sixes as batted throughout the innings.

Evans plays his cricket for Ammanford but lives at Fishguard and is a policeman in Haverfordwest, and his team mates included Andrew Williams (St Ishmaels) and Simon Cole (Cresselly), with Whitland’s Dai Lee as 12th man after playing in previous rounds. To complete the Pembrokeshire connection, former Cresselly batsman Richard Evans was team manager whilst Dai Morris (Fishguard) was the umpire!

Grant gives innings a powerful start – and Evans takes control

Huw Evans smashes a leg-side six.Dyfed Powys made a powerful start as former Glamorgan player Richard Grant started off in fine fettle so that he and Evans flew past the 100 mark in the 14th over, with Grant rasping 15 boundaries as he reached 77 in only 63 deliveries. But then Grant was well caught by Dan Chant off the bowling of Stuart White with the score on 111 and Surrey fought back well as White and especially slow bowler Mike Patey slowed the run-rate down.

Patey claimed the scalps of Gary Williams and Simon Cole in a miserly 2 for 14 haul from his nine overs but after skipper Mark Davies had departed to Chant it was Evans and Andrew Williams who assumed total control.

They started steadily but increased the tempo to such good effect that 117 runs came in the final ten of their 45 overs. They shared a partnership of 118 runs where Williams had five fours and three sixes in his 54 before he was out late on chasing more big runs. Evans sped to his century in fine style and was still there at the conclusion of the innings, where Dyfed Powys had amassed a huge total of 292 for 5.

Surrey shot out by Davies and the Grant brothers

Huw Evans salutes his century.Surrey needed a flying start if they were to gain control but Andrew Williams and Mark Williams kept things tight until; wickets inevitable began to fall. There were double figures for their first three of Mike Patey, Ben West and Justin Haygarth but thereafter only Andrew McPherson (39) ever looked likely to score more than a few runs against Richard Grant (2 for 13), his brother Gareth (2 for 23) and skipper Mark Davies, the former Gloucestershire player wrapping things up with 4 for 22.

Surrey were shot out for 123 runs in 33.5 overs, Huw Evans took three catches as wicket-keeper to complete a good all-round afternoon - and Dyfed Powys were worthy winners by a massive 169 runs!
