National Village Cup Competition:
Hicks inspires Carew to epic
win over former champions
Carew (194 for 6) beat
Shipton under Wychwood (193 for 9)
Umpires: John Williams & Richard Merriman.
Scorer: Tom Davies.
Venue: The Recreation Ground, Carew.
A superb innings of 67 not out by Tim Hicks inspired Carew to victory over visiting Shipton under Wychwood, a team which has a huge pedigree in the National Village Cup since they have twice been champions and were runners-up last season.
The win was all the more praiseworthy because Carew had to play without skipper Robbie Hicks, who was injured, but Ian Sefton did a very good job as stand-in captain and contributed an important 38 himself in the early stages, including four fours and a six.
Tim Hicks came in at number four batsmen after Carew had moved to 49 for 3 in pursuit of Shipton’s 193 for 9 – and proceeded to attack the strong bowling line-up of the visitors as he found a willing partner in Tom Richards, who contributed 37 (three fours) in their partnership of 111 before Richards got out. Hicks slammed seven fours and two big sixes as he faced just 73 deliveries and completely swung the game in Carew’s favour.
Shipton battle back after early struggles
Shipton had also struggled early on as Matthew Phillips grabbed two early wickets and Scott Helmich claimed the other as they lurched to 20 for 3 before skipper Simon Hole pulled things round in an innings of 77 that included nine fours and three sixes. He found useful support from Jason Hunt (28) and Paul Hemmings (23) but Carew had useful bowling performances from Helmich (3 for 24), Ceri Brace (3 for 31) Matthew Phillips (2 for 20) and Tim Hicks (1 for 36)
Their final tally was useful, without being too daunting for Carew and although Chris Brain (2 for 33), George Seacole (1 for 31), Shaun Miller (2 for 45) and Jason Hunt (1 for 31) all bowled well for Shipton it was Carew who prevailed in front of a large and appreciative crowd, and now face another home tie in two weeks time, at home to either Dumbleton or Ynystawe.
