Amazing finish at Llechryd

There was an amazing climax to the cricket match between Llechryd Seconds and their counterparts from Camrose/Spittal, not least the fact that the match was played almost throughout with the players battling not only the opposition but the elements as well.
But for two old Llechryd warhorses, whose combined age is 151, the weather mattered not a jot because they batted 28 overs as the last pair in taking their team to within seven runs before 75 year old Dai Spencer was bowled by Jonni Tomas, leaving 76 year old Dick Wyre undefeated and so close to a victory that might have resembled Napoleon at Waterloo or Nelson at Trafalgar!
Camrose batted first and scored 109 all out as Gareth Jones scored 26 and there was good bowling by Rhys Beard (4 for 15) and Tom Beard (3 for 5) so that the visitors were dismissed with ten overs still in hand.

Real battle to the finish

Llechryd were soon in trouble, however, against Gelly James (3 for 12) and Rob Ryan (3 for 9) and when our intrepid last pair joined forces they still needed 38 runs. It seemed that the players would get in out of the rain fairly soon but they batted sensible, taking singles where they could and enjoying quite a few extras because of the slippery ball making things even more difficult for the bowlers.

The edged ever closer and with only six runs needed for at least a tie, Dai was bowled and so ended a great battle that warms your heart. Dai and Dick might have not quite managed to secure success but they deserve a mention – and long may this doughty pair continue to be involved at Llechryd!
