Whitland quartet represent Wales Women at Under 20s Rugby
Whitland RFC ladies were well represented at a recent Wales Women under 20’s fixture against England with no fewer than four of the squad being based at the club and playing regularly for the Borderers and the Scarlets.
All four girls played a role in the game with Nia Davies, Ffion Jones and Catherine Davies all gaining their first caps and Chloe Howells adding to the two earned last season. Ffion Jones played as a tight head prop and joining her in the front row as loose head prop was Chloe Howells, whilst Catherine Davies played in the second row and Nia Davies turned out as open side flanker.
Early start for Ffion and Nia
Ffion has been playing for the Borderers since under nine level and at 18 years of age still has another season at this age level, as does Nia , who has also been playing from that age with Whitland. Catherine Davies has only been playing for a relatively few seasons but has developed rapidly and has already earned a reputation as a good lineout winner, whilst Chloe is the daughter of well-known former rugby player Max Howells, and although she plays prop for Wales she follows dad as she plays at No 8 for Whitland and the Scarlets.
Whitland team manager Sue Davies, who doubles up her work with the Scarlets, is understandably proud of her young charges.
“All of us at the club are delighted to have four such good players in the Welsh squad,” she said, “and it bodes well for the future. They all played really well and deserve a huge pat on the back.”
Wales ahead at half time
England were defending an unbeaten record going into the match and at halftime head coach Amanda Bennett must have been thinking the worst as Wales, who have only been together as a group for a month, compared to England who have been together most of the season, held a slender, but fully deserved, 12-8 lead.
England made influential changes after 60 minutes with Matthews, Gallagher and Peedle taking to the field. Matthews crashed over the try line after just three minutes of being on the field before Gallagher touched down under the posts on 62 minutes.
Peedle then gave the final score line of 25-12 a flattering look when she touched down to seal the victory for England. Despite the defeat against more experienced opposition, Wales definitely showed the future looks bright.
Very proud Sara
Wales’ team manager Sara Davies, said: “It was a great effort by the girls considering we have only been together for a month. The worst thing for us is the fact that we could have won the match and there is no doubt they were worried about losing their unbeaten record. The match proved there is some good talent coming through the system and with the next World Cup three years away, these first building blocks are building some firm foundations for the future.”
So PembrokeshireSport.co.uk says well done to all four girls – and long may they continue to fly the Pembrokeshire Flag in Wales Women’s rugby!
