Jubilee Cup Final:
Cresselly cruise to Jubilee victory
Cresselly (255 for 8) beat Carew ( 154 for 7 )
Venue: Carew.
Umpires: Alan Hansen & Peter Perry.
Scorers: Dave Richards & Chris Cole.
Cresselly gained the first cricketing silverware of the season as they beat near neighbours Carew in the now-traditional opener to the season, the Jubilee Cup, with the 2010 league champions batting first and setting too big a target for the current Harrison-Bowl holders to chase down.
Both sides were without several key players as the game took place in front of a large crowd and it gave the chance for some promising younger players to stake a claim for senior selection as the league starts next weekend. – but it was Damian Arthur who led Cresselly be example as his excellent undefeated 93 ultimately proved the difference between the teams.
Arthur, who was skippering the team in the absence of Phil Williams, came to the crease with Neale Williams and Simon Cole both departed early – and with Andrew Harries soon to follow them. He settled in nicely with Adam Chandler (21) and steadied the Cresselly innings throughout as he stroked 11 fours and a six in his innings.
Extras galore!
Richard Harries and Matthew Morgan, the oldest and youngest in the Cresselly side, also made useful contributions but the most significant boost to the Cresselly tally was a huge total of 66 extras, including no fewer than 43 wides!
Tom Richards and Martin Scourfield were the main Carew wicket-takers but their batsmen knew they needed to score at over 5.5 runs per over to take the silverware.
Ian Sefton scored 18 but was dismissed by Sion Jenkins before Nick Scourfield (40) and Tom Richards (31) took them close to three figures but they fell behind the clock and with Richard Harris claiming 2 for 31 and spinner Simon Cole grabbing 4 for 18 from his nine overs Carew had to settle on 154 for 7, with both Martin Scourfield (20) and Haydn Shapcott (17) batting well together at the finish.
