Special sisters at The Racecourse!
Few sporting clubs have a lady in their senior management committee but Haverfordwest Cricket Club has bucked that trend because they have TWO ladies helping to take their club forward – and they are sisters, as an added point of interest!
Ros Phillips is the hard-working Cricket Secretary, with responsibility for the organisation of fixtures and all other matters to do with cricket, whilst elder sister Alison Sanders is the Hon Treasurer, the lady charged with the responsibility of looking after the club’s finances.
Ros started her involvement over 20 years ago when her son Stephen was a youth player and she and better half Mackie used to watch matches. Then she was asked by the late Rita Sexton to join her on the committee and Stuart Williams, the chairman, casually suggested she might like to help out with the fixtures – and she has been there since 1997! Mackie also played when needed and helped coach the ladies, so the Phillips family are kept busy on The Racecourse!
Roped in to score
Then the late Ronnie Morse showed Ros how to score and at one stage was doing that job for the under 12s, 14, 16s, youth, ladies and seconds – but now focuses on the 2nd XI since she does so many other jobs – and is grateful for the help given her by Alison Thomas with the juniors.
Alison Sanders has also been involved for many years as the club’s auditor but took over the treasurer’s job when Micky Phillips stood down, using her wealth of experience as an accountant in this area. Ros laughingly says that Alison took on the job because she was bored but there is no doubt that she does a terrific job and with husband Billy can be seen at the club in the summer to watch the boys play.
