Rugby Preview:

Fixtures for 18th December 2010

Swalec Cup First Round:

Bridgend v Whitland
Bridgend are on a great run with 13 league wins and one draw (against Narberth!) so they will start as favourites for this tussle – if it goes ahead, that is! Verdict: A win for the Brewery Field boys.

Llanharan v Narberth
Narberth are second in Division One (West) whilst Llanharan are sixth in Division One (East) so on paper the others have a real chance. Verdict: I still think the East division is stronger and I won’t be surprised if the Drovers win!

Swalec Plate Second Round:

Kidwelly v Crymych
This is a real test for Crymych because opponents Kidwelly play in a section higher and are currently fifth in the table, with six wins from nine starts. Verdict: The Preseli Men are playing well and will go to Kidwelly with a positive attitude but this might be a test too big for them at the moment

Swalec Bowl Third Round:

Nantgaredig v Pembroke Dock Quins
Pembroke Dock Quins travel to Nantgaredig to play the top team from Division Six (West) so they will need to be at their best. The Quins are beginning to grow in confidence as they are tenth in Division Four (West) whilst Nantgaredig have won six league matches out of eight. Verdict: I hope the Quins win this one, if they are at something like full strength.

Division Three (West):

Haverfordwest v Llandeilo
This is a challenge for the Blues since Llandeilo are third, with six wins from nine matches, whilst the Blues are three places below. Verdict: I won’t be surprised if Haverfordwest win – but on form it has to be the visitors!

Division Four (West):

Amman United v Cardigan
Cardigan were playing well before the freeze-up but know that Amman United are the form team, having won all seven matches and also accrued six bonus points. Verdict: The Teifisiders face a good side here and I think Amman will ease home.

Neyland v Aberaeron
Neyland lost heavily at Aberaeron last weekend but are sure to be a different kettle of fish here with home advantage and a change of personnel. Verdict: I have a sneaky feeling that the All Blacks might well bounce back here!

Division Five (West):

Fishguard v Bynea
The Seagulls are eager to retain top spot and will be favourites to start this match because they are so close to the sea and have their own mini-climate which is usually a little warmer than inland. Verdict: Bynea have won once from eight starts and I’ll eat my hat if they beat the Seagulls, who should also pocket a bonus point!

Llandybie v St Davids
St Davids haven’t played so well of late but there is no doubting their commitment – but they might find it hard going on this trip to Llandybie, where the opposition are fifth, with five wins out of eight games. Verdict: A home win – sadly!

Llangwm v Furnace
Llangwm are capable of doing well against any side in the section but Furnace are hot stuff because they have only lost once and are in second place in the section. Verdict: The Wasps will go close but Furnace are a very good side and might just edge the verdict!

St Clears v Pembroke
St Clears are never easy to beat on their own patch and Pembroke are not traditionally the best travellers – so on paper it could be close. Verdict: St Clears have only won twice and so I expect the Scarlets to win this match.
