Julie’s getting to grips with new judo job
The Welsh Judo Association has appointed Black Belt international Julie Collings as the new South West Wales Regional Consultant and Coach.
This appointment will challenge Judo to raise its profile and look at entry into the sport at grass roots level and the creation of performance pathways for Judo players with potential to compete at a higher level.
Julie, one of four consultants in Wales, has been tasked with developing Judo and attracting more players to the sport. She is beginning in Pembrokeshire to kick start the programme and is very keen to work with both Neyland and Haverfordwest Judo club coaches.
Damon McGarvie is going to take on the role of county coach to the senior team and both Dave Weatherbourn and John Cooper will focus their attentions on developing the junior squad sessions.
High hopes and expectations
“This is a team effort and I am very excited to be working with my old Judo
buddies again to help develop the sport even further in Wales,” said Julie.
“I was coached and mentored by Bill McGarvie, who is the founder of Judo in Pembrokeshire and have gained all my knowledge and experience from this fantastic coach and friend. Hopefully Bill can keep a watchful eye on how we get on.”
“Neyland Judo club has produced numerous Welsh and British Champions over the years. I am sure I can learn a great deal from their coaching abilities and dedication to what is no doubt going to be a very exciting time ahead”.
The first county squad training session was held at STP sports centre recently and about 30 junior and 10 seniors attended the session. They will be run bi-monthly with the next one the last Sunday of November.
If anyone is interested in taking part in a fun free trial Judo session at either Neyland or Haverfordwest please get in touch with Julie on 07775 820865
